Post-install tips in 2020?

Postby dfs64 » Oct 20th, '20, 03:08

Hi :)

I'm in and out of various distros for over a decade. Not an advanced user by the way.

I've been searching for post-install tips for Mageia 7.1. I just installed it last night and at first I didn't get my WiFi to work then randomly going back and forth the Network (during installation) screen suddenly it decided to be able to detect my wifi card. How strange; I'm not complaining but I'm worried things like this might suddenly cause the WiFi to no longer work after a few days/weeks/months, maybe I'm paranoid but we'll see.

Anyway, any post-install tips you'd recommend? The ones on the web are either outdated or too short of a list.

If it helps you to recommend what's necessary let me describe my usage pattern; I'm a light user I guess, I don't really game on this machine, just movies and streaming and some web building (on Windows I used XAMPP).

I've done all updates for now including installing Nvidia driver. Just wondering if there is something else I need to do? It feels so different with Mageia; with other distros there are like so many things to do for post-install but for Mageia, it looks complete and I feel like I don't need to use the CLI at all (I'm on KDE btw). I'm not sure where to look and I plan to use Mageia 7.1 to replace my Windows 10 for a very long time. I've wiped my entire hard disk so, I'm gonna dive in really deep hehe.

Welcome to Mageia, dfs64.

If you have followed Mageia Welcome, most likely nothing more to do, except maybe update (pretty universal), and add some applications, missing for you. ;)
However, need some CLI work from you.

please attach output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
so that we can see what your wifi device is, then to check if the driver is correct.

BTW, if Plasma doesnt work out for you (sure, right) it is easy to just add another desktop and change to that via logout / select other desktop / login.
next time you log in, just hover the mouse over the "Plasma" entry and a drop down should happen, with iceWM Session also listed.
its a spare DE, just in case Plasma gets borked somehow.

cheers

Thanks. I've been looking into that immediately post install. I just wanted to know if there's Mageia specific tweak or your personal fave to-do after installing a fresh Linux distro :)

Thanks I will check after work later. Everything's perfect, works right out of the box :) Just some complaints on not being able to use Spotify for example.

I saw somewhere about converting deb to rpm. Does that always work?

Welcome :)

Just some complaints on not being able to use Spotify for example.

Known problematic app. Search this forum..
Some get it working with Flatpack, some not... https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27126
Myself reverted to using Firefox with https://open.spotify.com/

I saw somewhere about converting deb to rpm. Does that always work?

No. But you may be lucky.

so wifi is Intel, so unless very new hardware, wifi is supported by driver in kernel

as root:
Code: Select all
ifconfig -a

this will give an overview of the operation of the wifi network

(please obscure your network address from the result)

Re: Post-install tips in 2020? -> Spotify install (dirty way

Postby aleximon » Oct 23rd, '20, 17:29

Hello!
I tried these instructions with .deb "official" package (spotify-client_1.1.26.501.gbe11e53b-15_amd64.deb today):
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11003&p=71011#p64907
After install using rpm command, when I tried to run from terminal, libcurl-gnutls.so.4 was missing.
My dirty solution was to create a symbolic link to libcurl.so.4.6.0:
Code: Select all
# ln -s /usr/lib64/libcurl.so.4.6.0 /usr/lib64/libcurl-gnutls.so.4

And its works!
Then, I moved spotify.desktop to applications path:
Code: Select all
# cp /usr/share/spotify/spotify.desktop /usr/share/applications/

Now, I'm using Spotify without problems
(sorry for my English)
Goodbye!

Mageia stores /tmp in RAM by default. If you run out of free space there (like me), you can move /tmp to disk:
Code: Select all
sudo systemctl mask tmp.mount

You can also configure the "Mageia Control Center" to start without a password (for convenience):
Code: Select all
sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/51-draksec.rules
case 'drakconf': return polkit.Result.YES;
