How to install TimeShift

Postby WetGeek » Jun 18th, '19, 21:41

I'd like to install TimeShift, but haven't figured out yet how to do that. I've tried searching the software installer without any luck. I've installed both apt and zypper, but don't know what repository to load.

I've searched the forums, too, but the only results seemed to be about Daylight Savings time.

Any help appreciated,

Jerry

Is this the TimeShift you're talking about? If it is, you might want to run the generic timeshift-v19.01-amd64.run installer from the releases (or timeshift-v19.01-i386.run if you're on a 32-bit system). Although, from what I can tell, the generic installer could still use a package manager; if that installer doesn't work, since it mentions dnf for Fedora-based distros, you might want to dry installing dnf in Mageia and try again

Thanks for the response. However, I spent about an hour solving one problem and moving on to the next, and was never able to get it installed. The .run file required dpkg, which I was able to install, after which it required apt-cache, which the software installer could not provide. Eventually there were four dependants needed which were likewise unavailable. Obviously one or more additional repositories are required, but I have no idea which.

I tried to install the .deb package with similar results. I could only open it with Ark, and couldn't figure out how to use dpkg (which is present) to get it installed.

No other distribution I've used has ever required this much work to get TimeShift installed. That even includes openSuse, thanks to their build service. I hope some day Mageia will offer it in their installer.

Is there a way to install a .deb package to Mageia that I haven't figured out yet? I saw no way to install a downloaded .deb file with the Install & Remove Software tool.

Well, I only know of alien, but I've never used it and have no idea if it'll work for you. An alternative would've been to look for a flatpak, but there doesn't seem to be any available. Maybe I'll try installing the application myself once I get back home

Thanks again. Please let us know if you find a way to get it installed. (Or we could just wait for v7.0 release and hope it's included there!)

I've tried installing it and it did extract all the timeshift files correctly, ending the installation with a warning that it couldn't recognize the package manager; maybe the reason it tried to use dpkg for you was that you'd already installed apt, so the .run script thought you were on Debian. Maybe if you uninstall apt and try again it'll work, and then you'd only have to install the dependencies manually: in Mageia they should be

lib64gee0.8_2
lib64vte2.91_0
json-glib
rsync

Sorry, I can't see if it works right now because I'm in the middle of some issues on Cauldron

Thanks for giving it a shot. I want to be careful not to make it seem like this is too important for me. We're talking about an RC1 that will be very different by the time it's released, and I'm happy to wait until then.
