Video tearing and screen lockup Mageia 2 (64-bit)

Postby jkkuhn » Sep 16th, '12, 07:02

Hi. I'm hoping someone can help me with some video tearing and lock-up issues. Most video - when viewed full-screen - is tearing. When viewing full-screen Flash videos, it's even worse because the computer becomes unresponsive, making it difficult to get out of the full-screen mode. I usually end up just waiting for the video to finish, then the computer responds again. (Killing X will also work). Please note the tearing isn't limited to Flash. It's just that Flash seems to have other side effects.

I am running Mageia 2 64-bit (KDE) on a Thinkpad W500 with 8GB RAM. This laptop has switchable graphics, but I have those turned off and am using the integrated graphics card only. This is an Intel 4500MHD card. This problem does not occur when I use the Discrete ATI card; however using that card severely dimishes my battery life, so I'd prefer to use the integrated card. I have a triple boot system that includes Linux Mint KDE 12. This problem does not occur in Mint, even using the integrated card. But I'd much prefer to use Mageia as I've been a longtime Mandriva/Mageia fan. And for the most part it seems more stable and better suited for me.

I'm not sure what information I can give to help troubleshoot, but I'll at least give the relevant output from lspci. If there's any more information I can give please let me know. I'll willing to try anything. And hopefully I posted this in the right place.

BTW: I am using Kwin. I have tried turning on/off "Use OpenGL 2 Shaders", and also tried Compiz. Additionally, I've also tried turning off *all* effects. No luck.

Thank you!
Jeff

Thanks. I should have mentioned that I tried checking VSync (as well as unchecking "Use OpenGl 2 Shaders"). I got both suggestions from this thread. Unfortunately, they did not work.

I also remembered that I tried installing vaapi-driver-intel at one point, which also didn't help. I've since re-installed Mageia 2, so VAAPI is no longer installed.

Again, thanks for the quick response!

FYI: I still haven't been able to resolve this issue, despite looking through these forums. I also ran the "lspci -v" in Linux Mint (where this problem doesn't exist), and saw this line that isn't in Mageia:

Kernel modules: i915

The complete output is:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 2114
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 46

Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 3
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915

00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
Memory at f4200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]

Again, any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I will make one last attempt at solving this issue, then I'll just quietly deal with it. :)

If I can pay someone to help me out, I would. I would gladly give 50USD for video to work as efficiently in Mageia as it does in Mint KDE. You see, Mageia is stable in every other way - and I've been a fan since Mandrake 7. Linux Mint (for me, at least) is less stable.

I am at a complete and total loss as to why the above issue is occurring - but it makes my computer unuseable for video. If I can give you any information that will help, please let me know.

I promise to stop posting to this forum after this one!

Thanks again,
Jeff

Sorry I don't have an answer but have you checked bugzilla and maybe go to IRC and join the Mageia channel. Alot of users hang out there and offer advice, some are developers and othes who work with Mageia.

Are you running the same kernel in mint and mageia?

the intel driver comes with the kernel, so a newer kernel should work better;
you could also try to use a calderon kernel...

Here you can find more info on the intel driver:

The Mageia kernel is newer. Here is the uname -a from Mint:
Linux jeff-ThinkPad-W500 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And from Mageia:
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.3.8-desktop-2.mga2 #1 SMP Mon Jul 30 21:35:06 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I am willing try the kernel from Cauldron, but haven't successfully installed just the new kernel. Whenever I add Cauldron to my repositories it wants to update everything, and something invariably breaks - which is expected. :)

I'll also try getting on IRC and looking through Bugzilla. Maybe I'll get lucky. If nothing else I'll certainly learn more about this OS. haha..

Thanks again!

I had a similar thing with the intel driver in mandriva 2010

this was effecting the rendering of the pop up ment, but similar to what you describe.

I had to change the acceleration driver to a different on in xorg.conf.

perhaps something along the same lines is needed for yous.

for example the Load "v4l" option,

try

Load "glx"

and

Load "dbl"

see if there are any differences in your mint xorg.conf to mageia around this.

also look at the

Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"

I think that's the one to change, maybe to exa. Some related links on the matter:

Thanks for the suggestions.

Load "glx" and Load "dbl" seemed to have no effect. Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" caused a white screen while playing a full screen video - and "exa" didn't seem to have any effect.

My Mint installation doesn't have an xorg.conf. I know there's a way to force it to create one - which I'll do once I figure out how. (yay google). Then I'll compare the 2 configs and look for changes.
