[SOLVED] Need some advice on encryption software

Postby zugunder » Oct 19th, '11, 22:12

Hi,

I'd like to encrypt several folders on my laptop so that I'd be able to work with them encrypting/decrypting on the fly.
As far as I can see, there is no TrueCrypt in the repos. Could anyone recommend anything available for Mageia to try?

Thank you.

I don't have Mageia yet, so I can not test it, but have you tried:

http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads

Then going to linux, and downloading standard -> 32 bit or 64bit (depending on your arch)?

I'm using the Truecrypt package from MIB with no problems, despite the "No Mageia" logo on the homepage. I used the version in the Mandriva 2010.2 repository.

Doubtless someone will be along to say why this is a really bad idea, but it seems to work for me. :)

Thank you guys,

But here is one more question - will TrueCrypt install and, more importantly, run properly if I do not have a configured sudo?
I tried to install it from the official executable - it wants sudo... :-( but I wouldn't like to use it.

It needs sudo in order to mount the partition.

OK, got it.
Set up sudo and installed 64bit TrueCrypt (which, need to mention, went absolutely flawlessly).
We'll see how it works...
Thank you.

Yes, as TrueCrypt doesn't seem to have any reasonable alternative

There would be FreeOTFE, LUKS or diskcryptor for that purpose.

Also there is that thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=611
for that purpose, and you should at least pay attention to this:

Thank you for a tip!
However, as I noted in the thread you gave a link to, both FreeOTFE and Diskcryptor have only Win installers... However, LUKS (which is Linux) claims to be 100% compatible with FreeOTFE.
And as for the TrueCrypt - yes, a regular paranoid should yank it immediately :D But it is the only really cross-platform tool and is damn handy... which is too good to be true :(
