The 10 desktop environments and Window Manage in a Mageia 1

Postby macxi » Oct 8th, '11, 04:34

Hi,

I searched the desktop environments and window managers available for installation on Mageia (official repository) and found 10 of them. I installed almost all in virtualbox.

I saw that has a Wikipedia page that separates them into three types:

I didn't know about this classification. Now, for me, I think it's easier to understand what's what:

1 - "Graphical environment" (Desktop) Complete
KDE - GNOME (has many graphics resources, which requires more memory)
    Xfce - Lxde (light)

2 - "Shell (semi-environment)
    Enlightenment - (E17) (light)

3 - "Window manager only" (depend on the installation of a complete graphical environment)
Openbox - Fluxbox - IceWM, Fvwm2 - WindowMaker (extremely light)

I put these 10 desktops in three separate types, with many screenshots in the presentation page Mageia to give an idea of each.

I liked to know about these diverse desktops, a lighter and simpler than the other. What caught my attention in this survey is that almost all of them run LibreOffice and almost all (Gnome, LXDE Fxce, etc.) has a quick launcher (system tray) LibreOffice the toolbar, and LibreOffice is pretty fast these graphical environments more light. I say this because I am a KDE user and KDE this quick launcher is bug, does not work, as I have mentioned in another topic.

Cheers! :)

Hello,
Great job, if you could put these pages in English in the brand new Wiki (not ready yet), I will enjoy to translate them in French.
You said 512Mo of RAM for KDE, that seems very low to have all KDE features.

Hi Lebarhon, Ah7013, Isadora,

The idea is to suggest to the team Mageia wiki create a page, a kind of portal for beginners, with general tips for desktop users.

Lebarhon,
It would be nice to have more people in the team for the Mageia Wiki. Really great if also help to edit the tips for beginners :)

You're right, I said 512, but I don't know which one is right, I just copied the minimum requirement of Mageia page.

My english is a bike (don't go too fast or too far), but my french is less than basic. Still, I tried translating the homepage (Accueil) to french (with help of google language tools, a useful tool: add-ons Google Translator for Firefox, and the other dictionary online and one at my side). Then, despite the large amount of tools, excuse the errors :) .

Tks :)

You can trim down a KDE installation so it's workable with 512 MB. Maybe not as snappy as with double the memory, but useable.

I run a pretty full kde4 with effects enabled and some nice other stuff, after boot up it sits at ~450mb, so yes it can be done, but it will limit the number of other apps that you can run.

Not really, it will only increase swapping ...

Which is a limiting factor to the apps you can run, Im not sure about you, but i would rather run fewer apps with no swap than lots with swap....

I would rather upgrade my memory than using swap at all ;)

Fine you win.

Then again, I don't have a swap partition any more.
