[SOLVED]Mageia 9 Installation Failure

I am attempting to install Mageia 9 on this computer, which is currently running Mageia 8. I am attempting a clean install to a new disk from a Mageia 9 Live Plasma USB drive. Here is the inxi for the currently running system.

I boot the computer with the Live USB drive inserted in the USB 2 port and it posts the usual boot menu. I chose to boot using the nouveau driver to keep it simple. I will switch to Nvidia drivers later.

The system boots to this prompt

I step through the prompts giving the usual answers until I get to this screen.

I click on Next, and the system hangs, displaying the following messages:

It just sits there on that screen forever. It no longer accesses the USB drive.

I have never seen this happen before with any Mageia Live drive on any of my previous or current systems. I installed this Mageia 8 system on this computer using the same procedure with the Mageia 8 Live USB drive.

I have tried booting from the USB 3 port with the same results.

I am at a loss about what to do next.

Any help on where to go from here would be much appreciated.

I've booted from the regular DVD and also from the live DVD without selecting neither nouveau nor nvidia driver, and no such crash with an RTX 4070

Could simply be that your card is too new for the nouveau driver, and/or the kernel and X server on the install media:

Hm. A bit odd that a modern hardware works better with elder release.

Anyway, Two ways to get more recent versions

You could try to update the Live system: Make persistence, https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Persistent_live_systems, and boot it on another system and do a full update. We even have most recent kernel 6.6 and nvidia545 in testing repos currently: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32786, https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32565. Then boot it on your problematic system.

Alternatively: Do you have another graphics card to temporarily swap in, install, do a full update and then it probably works with the new GPU.

Or put the disk in another computer (temporarily removing the disk(s) that belongs to it), install to it, update, put in your problematic system, change driver (or change to correct driver before moving disk)...

When I first set up this computer with Mageia 8 I had a heck of a time getting the graphics to work with my RTX 3050 card. I had forgetten that part. I had to manually install the 510 Nvidia driver because Mag8 didn't have it.

I think I will try again later using the option to install the OS using the proprietary drivers right out of the box. I suspect that nouveau still does not support the RTX 3050.

I think that the 510 driver is now available in Mag9. Correct? I assume that the installer runs XFdrake during the installation process. Don't know. Never did it that way before.

Try 535 "current" also called "Production" and "GeForce 745 series and later" depending on where you look...

We also have 470 called both "latest legacy" and "GeForce 635 to 920),

I could not get the system to run at all, so I could not get to the installer. Nothing has been installed that would allow me to choose that option. I was trying to run the Live image, which did not work, so next time I will go directly to the installer and see if I can make some progress there.

That link shows a graphical installation screen, and my graphics card appears to not work at all. I appear to be in a chicken-egg situation where I cannot install the proprietary drivers until after the proprietary drivers are in use.

I did see the very first prompt dialogs using graphics, so something was going through my card. I don't know what driver it was using at that part of the boot. Maybe going directly to the installer instead of trying to boot the Live system will work.

I am currently running the 510.60.02 driver on this Mag 8 system. According to the Nvidia website the current driver for the RTX 3050 is

But since I am currently running with 510, I assume that 535 will support my card. I am somewhat surprised that nouveau doesn't work with the card, but that is what it is.

If I can get the installer to run I will try out "Geforce 745 series and later" and see what happens.

What happens when you not try to install via the Live media but the regular DVD ?

So sorry for the long delay responding to this thread. This is a busy computer, and finding down time has been difficult.

I did get the installation to work using the live jump drive. I had no interest really in running the live image, so I booted to the installer and went straight to the installation. I selected "+ use non-free NVIDIA drivers (slower to boot)" and it was able to boot into the installer.

I did the installation twice. After the first installation, rebooting failed to find a bootable drive, and it went directly to the BIOS. On the second attempt, on the screen that shows the boot command I had to select "Install in /EFI/BOOT (removable device or workaround for some BIOSs)" and then it makes a bootable disk.

I don't understand the details of what that option does, but it works with this MOBO.

So I guess my MOBO, "MSI MPG Z590 GAMING PLUS LGA 1200 Intel Z590" is one of those with a BIOS that needs a workaround.

This happened when I installed Mag9 on my other MSI MOBO, "MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI LGA 1200 Intel Z490". So i looks like it is a generic MSI probrlem.

The bottom line then is that my Geforce RTX 3050 graphics card does not work with nouveau, and that my MOBO requres selecting Install in /EFI/BOOT.

Anyway, it is working now.

I don't understand the details of what that option does, but it works with this MOBO.

Thank you for the links to that information. I will take a look at it. It is always good to know what is going on behind the scenes.

Another takeaway from this adventure that I forgot to mention is that the Nvidia RTX 3050 is now supported by the nvidia-current drivers, whereas it was not in Mag 8. On Mag 8 I had to install the 510 driver to get support. It works out of the box on Mag 9 with the 535 driver.
