OK, I fiddled a LOT with all the graphics settings (and gave Mageia-1 a spin), with the fglrx drivers too.
Nothing worked.
Now, my time is very limited, so I turned to the manufacturers driver. = AMD Catalyst 11.9
Any succes?

Works perfectly in just 10 sec.!!
I know it's not open-source, but hey, the machine+bios isn't either. At least I can forget Windows now for 99% of my time.
For migration, I can try this 11.9 on Mandy 2008 as well. And maybe I can upgrade that a later version.

Just curious wich one I would need for my Asus X73T, its a radeon HD 6600 card.

Well, if it has an AMD type A4, A6 or A8 processor, and maybe an extra/dedicated card...then just get the lastest = 11.12.
It just works.

Just goto real console (alt-F1), to runlevel 2 or 3, install it, and reboot.
Give it some time to startup. It won't show an AMD or ATI logo.

If it does not work, check for a ...kms.... entry on boot-up/kernel line. remove or reverse setting.

You DO need to un-install it if you want to upgrade it.
