Mageia 5 hasn't been supported in years, but that message tells you what to do. Press the enter key and it should take you to a login prompt. Log in as root and then run drakx11 and configure your display. If that doesn't work, what package exactly did you remove?

Yes because the unsupported release repositories have been archived since quite some time.

This wont work, as a direct upgrade to MGA8 is only possible from MGA7. He need to do a fresh installation. If a seperate /home is existing, he "may " have some luck but most settings will be incompatible as the version steps are to big.

This is also described in the wiki:
This page deals with the different ways to upgrade a Mageia operating system from version n to n+1 (It is not possible to upgrade to a version number beyond n+1).The upgrade procedure is different from a simple packages update.

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_choos ... ade_method

There is some hope left, as all tier 1 mirrors keep an archive directory of old releases beginning from MGA1. So it should be possible to get an MGA5 ISO, burn it, and "update" the broken installation. After that a complete backup of all important data is recommended and afterwards an installation of a supported MGA version...

Uhm, yeah….no! The message shows clearly that no graphic display is configured. So it is not possible to startx

I would suggest to install Mageia 8 fresh (or even Mageia 9), keeping home, but creating a fresh user (different UID than the one present)

When the new installation is OK, then move old user files, including setting ownership.

Consider putting in a fresh SSD drive instead of the old, then install to that, then connect the old and copy user files files.
At home & work Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011. Thinkpad T40, T43, T60, T400, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox, BOINC

could you get off your pony mr sturmvogel?
The sentence "not sure about the package" could refer to the display package (not being aware of which specific package was removed along with the main package), or to the main package he removed (if he was deleting stuff he might have typed some command to specifically remove a particular program, don't you think it could give us a hint of the dependencies that were removed?).

Do you believe it yourself? If the poster would know which packages where removed, he would ask: how do i get the internet connection up and the packages reinstalled via command line...no?

And a way to repair the heavily outdated MGA5 installation was already given:
