Fixing mime-types icons in Mageia-8/9(Cauldron)

Postby mgauser » Aug 26th, '22, 20:25

Hello. I really enjoyed making rpm-patches to fix problems in Mageia, especially those whose hope of fixing is extremely low (due to circumstances beyond the control of the Mageia team). Today I want to introduce another bug related to the display of icons of files that are located in the folder "/usr/share/icons/hicolor".

Let me remind you that the first bug was related to the adwaita-icon-theme in Mageia-8/9(Cauldron): https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27644.
For the fix was released adwaita-mime-patch.

But the most fresh bug appeared already in Mageia-9(Cauldron) after the shared-mime-info-v2.2 update.
Accordingly was released shared-mime-info-patch.
Note: Updating the mime type database after installation takes some time.

Here I have given exactly what will not be fixed in the near future. I hope this will be useful to someone. That's all for now.

p.s. there is also a bug in the urpmi package in Mageia-9(Cauldron), but it is insignificant and appears only after executing the "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime" command. I think it will be fixed sooner or later anyway. Good luck.

Sincerely,
Alex

Hi, Morgan.
There's no point, my friend. From there, I will be sent to the upstream developers again, but I have already been there (see the Issue on my GitHub at the links above). In general, there is not much to publish. :D

Mind to share a link to that upstream issue? Because I don't see one.

In general this is the right way, something like this should be fixed upstream, but this might be difficult and also take quite some time.
Some other "popular" examples are the longstanding bug in sddm for the initial keyboard layout before a button is pressed: https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/202
Or another infamous issue about shared-mime-info and .iso recognition: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=337035

With great pleasure, dear doktor5000. :)

1. The problem related to adwaita-icon-theme:
The beginning. 1 year ago...
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/adwaita- ... issues/108

The last answer of a month ago on the same question from a related topic:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/2190

The developers claim that they are doing well and are constantly closing new and new related/similar issues, for example this one:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/1873

2. A new problem related to shared-mime-info, only in Mageia-9(Cauldron)
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/shar ... issues/188

It seems to me that everything is much simpler here. The whole story is so confusing that those guys who are still trying to maintain and update something (freedesktop/GNOME) do not own the situation themselves and simply do not know what to do with it. If there are no Standards, there is no System.

Well, you might need to look at how we package the icon themes, as sometimes we have some custom additions/modifications which don't come from upstream.

Apart from that, you may need to discuss this with the freedesktop guys who know about icon themes, because I only see gnome issues for nautilus/adwaita.
The last report for shared-mime-info only seems to be a workaround hiding the real cause for this.

Hello, doktor5000. Additionally about "adwaita-icon-theme" problem...

Since it is not completely clear from which side it is necessary to approach this problem (mime-type/hicolor), I decided to change tactics... I used to say: "Nothing works for me, look for the problem here." Now I say: "Everything works for me. Why do you think it doesn't work for you?" and opened another Issue directly from the developer of the Nemo file manager: https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/3062

How do you think all this will end? :D
