[SOLVED] HP Deskjet 1510 printer has stopped printing

[SOLVED] HP Deskjet 1510 printer has stopped printing

Postby Linares » Jul 22nd, '22, 17:45

I have been using this printer normally at Mageia for three years. But, after a few weeks without using it, today I went to print an .ods document and found the following issue: A message appears in the bottom right telling me that the document has been printed but, in fact, it has not been printed.

Image

The printer, despite being turned on, does not make the slightest noise or movement during the process.

The work has been left there as "Stopped".

Is the printer showing an error on its own screen?

My 3510 will show "out of paper" when it isn't. It has recently been showing "Clear carriage jam", and I have no idea what that means. I fix the paper issue by taking out the paper and reinserting it. I fix the carriage jam by turning off the printer and unplugging it for a few seconds, then rebooting it.

Please provide the output as root of
Code: Select all

The printer does not show any type of error. In fact, I am dual booting and from Windows it prints that document completely normally. But I want to work in Mageia, of course.

A lot of things have happened executing that little instruction.
A result so mileage has been generated that the start has been lost on the console. Instead, when I run it a second time, only this comes out.

Unfortunately, the printer continues with the same problem.

Mageia 7 is end of life since June 2021 and therefore gets no security updates or bugfixes anymore. Also the HP drivers are outdated and don't contain actual bugfixes applied to this package..

Please update to a supported Mageia 8 version where also the HP drivers are up to date and supported.

First of all, thank you very much for sharing your point of view with me. But is it undoubtedly, unequivocally and categorically that the printer has stopped working for that reason? It's intriguing, or dubious, because this same printer has been running with Mageia 7 and the HP outdates drivers up to a month ago (a full year after end of support) and has suddenly stopped without making any changes to the system. It's a bit strange.

You might remove the printer and go through the setup again.

disclaimer: I am not using an HP printer, nor the HPLIP status service.

now that is out of the way, is the printer networked, wireless or USB connected?

if networked or wireless, has the URI of the device changed?
reason for question: my networked Kyocera Laserjet managed to change its URI, (xxx.xxx.x.69:631/ipp to xxx.xxx.x.64:631/ipp) yet Libre-Office would report that it had printed.

If USB connected, as suggested by Germ, try an un-install and then re-install.

FYI, my HP printers, 3510 and P1102W, both have built in tools to negotiate a static IP to avoid the wandering URI problem. I don't remember the details, but basically I think I invoked the tool on the printer and then waited a couple of minutes for the printer and the router to negotiate an IP. When I log into the router it confirms static IP addresses.

If you have not already done that, you could look into it on your own printer model.

Following this advice, I have removed the printer. But I don't know the step to follow after having pressed the "Add" button. This screen appears to me. I also don't know what a URI is and where to get the one for this printer.

Image

I will complete information: The printer is in perfect condition and correctly connected. Because I have installed VirtualBox and a Windows 7 virtual machine, after which I have been able to print correctly. So my problem is in Mageia.

As you still didn't tell how your printer is connected....
URI is the IP adress of the printer...
Read: https://doc.mageia.org/mcc/8/en/content/mcc-hardware.html#system-config-printer

You can also try to setup the printer with the hp tools directly as root:
Code: Select all
hp-setup

Sorry, the printer is connected by USB cable.

I have made little progress. After deleting it, I've added it back through http://localhost:631/, but it still doesn't print, just as dead as it was at the beginning of the problem.

The output of hp-setup is:

Code: Select all

error: Unable to locate models.dat file

The error message says that it cannot find models.dat.

error: Unable to locate models.dat file

On my system the file is at /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat

Maybe something has corrupted your hplip installation. Perhaps reinstalling hplip would restore the file. I don't know how else you would get a copy of it.

In case the hplip installation was corrupted, I have uninstalled and restarted the computer. When I have tried to reinstall hplip again, I have received the following error:

1 installation transactions failed

There was a problem during installation:

for the installation of the package hplip-3.19.5-1.mga7.x86_64 13MB is needed in the file system /

I think it's related to this other error trying to install something else: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14669&p=86159#p86158

It is very strange because according to baobab the file system has 700 Mb free.

you will need to remove something from your / file system.

perhaps libre-office or firefox -they are huge.
then install the hplip package and check that the printer can be installed and functions.

determine the applications that you really do not use and/or can live without, (as going by your other thread, you are running close to the limit in your / ) and remove them. then re-install L.O. (or the application you removed)

another option would be to resize your / partition.

Ben this topic was already mentioned in the other thread. But there is no chance to resize anything on his 50GB drive... It's full...

possible option:
unlisted /swap relocated to end of resized sda1 (sda2)
(df -h does not list it, likely /dev/nvme0n1p6, but require confirmation from OP.)
Code: Select all
fdisk -l
maybe a screen grab from diskdrake to see order & locations of partitions

extend / into now vacant SSD space.
fix printer issue with / (/dev/nvme0n1p5) by installing package currently unable to be installed due to lack of space.
locate and remove excess packages over and above the 4 kernel packages listed and excess logs.

resize / and relocate /swap back, remove partition sda2, resize sda1.

if no swap partition, OP may be able to resize /home if /dev/nvme0n1p7 and /dev/nvme0n1p5 are next to each other.

backups before any partitioning adjustments are a requirement.

From what I'm seeing, freeing up space on the hard drive, and reinstalling KDE Plasma, hplip has been reinstalled. So we can continue with the investigation.

I found it easier to connect my HP via Ethernet. It makes it that much easier to add to Linux when creating new virtual machines: (as sudo) hp-setup -a <IP address> and done.

But to the OP, I would definitely encourage an upgrade to Mageia 8.

Ironically, my HP P1102W LaserJet just stopped working. I have been using this printer for many years, and I know it was working after I set up this Mageia 8 version. It is my main printer.

The error message is

Print job failed - required plug-in not found:
Plugin missing

The print job in CUPS shows

stopped
"Filter failed"

It looks like something has changed in hplip.

Hplip was updated on July 10. I don't remember whether I have tried to print to that printer since then or not. I suspect not.

I will try to figure out my own problem and post a new thread if I cannot. But I thought that it might be relevant to this thread where other HP printers have just stopped working.

OK. Never mind. I rebooted the computer and tried to print. This time, hplip posted a dialog saying that the printer requires a plugin and offered to install it. I did the installation and the printer works.

This is confusing because the printer was properly installed and working prior to this. Somehow it lost the plugin. Very strange.

Anyway, this problem is not related to the OP's problem, so I apologize for interrupting the thread.

Hello.

I'm giving this thread a new push up, to see if someone can help me, because the situation has gotten a bit worse.

I had to change the black ink cartridge because it was completely consumed, printing everything in Windows, of course, because in Mageia the printer doesn't work.

Since that change of ink cartridge, every time I turn on the printer in Mageia, every time I press the ON button, it prints (with its consequent waste of ink) the HP check sheet.

In short, is happening the bizarre situation of not printing absolutely anything in Mageia, except the f*** check sheet after changing the cartridge.

I appreciate any help or suggestion.

Remove your printer from the computer. Unplug it, delete the connection if wifi. Delete all the configurations for it that are left. Remove all print related packages.

Reboot, connect the printer, and let it start from scratch installing packages and configuring.

that's all I can think of....
