Managing -moving -copying 300gb of recovered Files

Postby brm » Feb 14th, '22, 02:03

Hi all. Recently I had to make use of Photorec to recover some files on a hard drive. It saved 3 - 4 million files onto a small hard drive. Now I want to move this to a NAS. When attempting this I realized it would take days for the transfer. Any ideas how to go about this? Should I compress this data? How? Photorec seems to recover many many hundreds of small files. Some would not open at all. But when searching for common formats jpegs, text files, cad files etc I found many that were usable. I would like to save these and sort them into some order.

Not sure if I used Photorec the right way. It recovered a hell of a lot of data.

For sorting you might try the tips from the manufacturer of Photorec:

The amount of data depends how you set the filter: If you scan a complete corrupted drive you will get a lot af data. If you only search for deleted files you may get less data. You can also scan only for defined file extensions, e.g. if you only want to recover your music or docbook collection or whatever. The available documentation for Photorec is really extensiv and can be found easily via internet or by using the man pages.

You could use rsync to transfer the data to the NAS. rsync can also do compression during the transfer, but mostly that doesn't make sense in a local network, because the limiting factor is not the transfer volume.

But I'm not sure if this is really what you're asking for ... you may want to rephrase your question for clarification.
