Mageia7 freezes

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

Mageia7 freezes

Postby ovince » Apr 11th, '20, 09:41

Hi All,

I recently installed Mageai7 (details below). Relatively often, the OS freezes and I have to shut down my computer by force. Has anyone complained about this problem and how can I solve it?

Also happens to me, tried to update with

Code: Select all
# urpmi --auto-update

after this update much improved, many libraries were updated.

How does it freeze, making it work?

I have updated just now. Will see what happens....

I did not pay attention, but it seems that there are no rules when the freezing will occur. The last few times have happened when I ran some python scripts. Literally everything is dead and only helps shutting down the computer with a long hold of the power-off button

Just to inform you, that it happened again. This time the freezing happened gradually: first I could not use only Panel but I was able to activate my applications/editor/etc via Alt-Tab and use them. Some 5min later everything died.

Do you have some suggestions how to remedy this?

With these freezing problems, the only thing you can do is go clean with enough patience.
What does the terminal return?

Code: Select all
$ systemctl --failed
$ lspcidrake -v
$ journalctl -b 1   #any pastebin

What is the specs of the computer, eg RAM .
Is any partition running out of free space ?
In Plasma - Dolphin free space is shown down right at the status line. may need a small configuration of Dolphin.

the RAM is 8 GB
the HD is 500GB

Partitions are:
/ is 50 GB (10% used)
/home is 390 GB (83% used)
/swap is 24 GB (5% i used)

I attached the result of the command line commands.

This means that the file you are trying to upload does not have an allowed extension. The forum does not allow all types of files to be uploaded, and it mainly goes by filename extension.
The file you uploaded does not have any extension, it's just called "listing" - you would have to rename it to listing.log or listing.txt to be able to upload it.

Apart from that, I don't see any freezing in the log excerpt you posted. You initiated a reboot at 12:13:39 and then the system began to shutdown. When did the freezes occur that you mentioned ?
Also maybe you should not leave your system running for nearly 4 weeks, maybe reboot some time in between ?

it happened before my post where I inform you about the event "Just to inform you, that it happened again....".

Thanks for advice. I will reboot system more often

Sorry, that's a bit too vague. You would need to mention a particular point in time, and also provide a log excerpt that includes like at least 15 minutes before and after point in time, otherwise we can't tell much about possible causes of the freeze remotely.

Is your last freeze covered in the journalctl listing you attached, if so when ? That log begins at Mar 22 11:52:26 CET, your post is from Apr 16, that doesn't really match ...

Next time it happens, I will reboot system and send you 'listing.txt' just after rebooting. If you have some other diagnostic tips that I should join to these three please let me know.

It happened again. After it, I could only switch between open applications with Alt-Tab. This is the exact sequence of my subsequent actions:

8:31 AM CET (PC time): freezing

8:36 AM CET (my hand watch time since the panel was frozen along wih PC time): hard reboot

then I issued command chain
$ systemctl --failed; echo "*****";lspcidrake -v; echo "*****"; journalctl -b 1 > listing.txt

I am a simple PC user. I even don't know what these commands mean. 'journalctl' command, as I can see, provide some kind of diary of events. I am wandering, how the journal with events on 23th and 24th of March can help us with the freezing that happened today?

It should be journalctl -b -1
or more generally journalctl -b -<number of reboots since the one you want logs for>

There's nothing about the freezes during that timeframe. Those are all usual messages

This might really be a hardware issue, like overheating or such.

Sorry in advance for bothering you with these questions:

What is the usual behaviour of the laptop in case of overheating? Isn't there some normal way to issue warning and shut down the system rather than freezing?

is there a way to find out more details? Some application showing the proccesor temperature? To check the efficiency of the cooler?

Ant the third set of questions. Why this behaviour coincide with instalation of M7? I havn't have this problem with M5 for example.

Freezes are usually quite hard to troubleshoot. You can use the forum search, there are quite a few threads for similar issues.
E.g. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12561 where it was a faulty memory module, as shown by memtest.
Other causes, like filesystems runnning full/GPU crashes as in viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12028

ovince wrote:What is the usual behaviour of the laptop in case of overheating? Isn't there some normal way to issue warning and shut down the system rather than freezing?

It depends. Some models will issue some beeps when they overheat, some will just turn off if you hit a certain threshold.
thresholds are usually visible below /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone[0-*]

ovince wrote:is there a way to find out more details? Some application showing the proccesor temperature? To check the efficiency of the cooler?

There are various tools to monitor the temperature, nearly every desktop environment has standard applets for such basic hardware monitors.
You can't really check the efficiency of the cooler easily, you would have to have a reference cooler, measure that at a defined system load. Then compare it to your cooler, using the same system load.

Although depending on the age of your box, you may want to refresh the thermal paste, if CPU cooler is easily accessible. If it's not or if you have never done that before,
better don't try it as chances are high that you might not be able to put your box back together with everything working properly.

ovince wrote:Ant the third set of questions. Why this behaviour coincide with instalation of M7? I havn't have this problem with M5 for example.

Totally different kernel usually also brings different behaviour for all sorts of hardware. M5 had kernel 3.19/4.1 and M7 has kernel 5.5 as of now.
