[Solved] Boot Hangs after install

Postby BrentRogers » Apr 14th, '20, 19:27

I just did a fresh install of 7.1.
The install went fine.

After it boots all I see is the "Splash Screen".
That is the one with the "Funny Cup with Bubbles Logo".
It started off with different bubbles showing -- now just one.

It does not want to seem to do anything else.

Any Ideas?

Pressing the 'Esc' key should flip away from the splash screen.

At startup in grub edit the parameters to remove 'splash' and 'quiet' so you'll have half a chance to see what's happening.
I see my C has been in the sea too long - it's gone rusty.

Esc -- does nothing
If I did watch the screen, I did see a lot of "stuff" scroll by.
It was too quick to notice anything -- and there was so much.

Sometimes it restarts a number of times during the boot up.

Hi there,

it would be helpful if you would mention what installation media you used (Live DVD, normal DVD, ...) and which desktop environment you installed.
Also, what graphics card does your box have?

I downloaded a 'normal DVD' and installed from there.
Selected the default environment.
Don't recall the Graphics card -- set up as Generic 1280 x1024 60hz

The Graphics card in your computer is most likely mentioned on the receipt or invoice you got when you bought the computer. A booklet of the Graphics may also have been included in the package.
Maybe entering the computers BIOS will specify the Graphics card.
You could also try to use a Live DVD to run MAgeia Live and see what happens. You may be able to inspect your installation on HD and look at files in /var/log/

Can't see anything in the BIOS.
Computer is quite old [ DELL OPTIPLEX GX620 ].
It was actually a "Retired" machine from work, so no manuals, etc.

Try again with one of the live versions, if that boots up.
From what I can tell, that optiplex was available with either Intel 950 IGP or a ATI Radeon X600-something.

Also, at the end of the installation, or when you boot to single-user mode and run drakconf/drakx11, you should select Plug&Play as monitor type and not some fixed resolution.
Have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_chang ... hic_driver

Downloading the Live Image now.
BTW: tried Plug-n-Play earlier -- had other issues [ don't recall ]
Thought it was the video setting so tried again using the fixed resolution.

Will try with "Live" once downloaded and 'burned'.

When booting the "Live DVD" and selecting to Run Magiea LIVE
get stuck again at the "Splash Screen", but this time pressing ESC give me a bunch of errors:

print_req_error: I/o error sr0 sector 0 flags 0
buffer I/o error on dev sr0 logical block 16 async page read

Ad infinitum.
Sometime the sector and block number change.

That sounds either like a bad burn or a defective DVD drive. Did you maybe verify the checksum after the download?
Also can you try to write the image to an USB stick? That way you could rule out the DVD drive and don't need to waste another DVD.

Not quite solved.....
I was able to log-in once using 'recovery option'
But now when I start -- using recovery option -- the system hangs after I log in.
ESC does not seem to do anything -- All I can seem to do is poweroff.
If I boot using std magiea 7.1 I get a bunch of error messages -- but no splash screen.
All I did in 'recovery mode' was to set graphics card to PlugNPlay vs Generic 1280 x1024 60hz

Well one step forward, two steps back...
I realized that my machine was actually a 64 bit machine [ or so I thought ]
So I downloaded a 64 bit image, burned the DVD and tried the install.
Now it hangs on "Installing … Time Remaining : (estimating...)

clicking Cancel , Details and/or "Release Notes" does nothing.

When your computer is that old (Pentium4) : have the BIOS battery been replaced, otherwise I suggest you replace it with a new battery.
By the way : how much RAM does it have ?

You don't have to, 32bit will just work fine. And if you don't have that much RAM it will even save a slight bit.

Thank you
Tried again with the 32bit.
This time set Screen to Flat Panel 1680x1050
[I am using the same screen for a Win10 machine & it works fine]
However even with 'recovery mode' it does not get past the 'text log'
how can I 'reset to another display option'

As mentioned in the wiki article, when the boot hangs, then try to open a console (tty) typing simultaneously the keys Alt+Ctrl+F3 (or Alt+Ctrl+F2)
Does that work ?

Ctrl-Alt-F2 and/or Ctrl-Alt-F3 does not seem to do anything.
However when in Recover Mode -- I do get to a tty prompt [console] as prompts for Root Password.
If I enter it, I get a TTY prompt.

If you've got logged in as root you should be able to, as doktor has said, run drakx11 and change the graphics settings... my personal choice in your situation would be to disable 'Automatically start...' in the Options section so that when you reboot you should consistently get to a text login. Then you can try sorting things out from there and manually starting x until you're happy you've got the display working properly.

However, with some of the other things you've mentioned I'm suspicious that there's more than a graphics driver issue. Did/does the system work okay with other OSs? Is the memory working properly (any old copy of memtest86 might be worth a run)?
Just thinking aloud.

Ok..
Progress.. [ I hope ].

I am able to get to the tty prompts and run drakx11
Tried a new resolution Flat Panel 1280 x1024.
Now normal boot shows "Plasma Splash screen with moving dot"
Don't have a login yet. Ctrl-Alt-F2, [...F3, ...F4] don't seem to do anything.

Sometimes after setting the Resolution, I got my mouse to move on [Ctrl-Alt-F1 -- but no log-in screen, just the boot log]

How would I manually start X.

As for the system with other OSs.
Had earlier releases of Magiea. This is actually an upgrade from Magiea 5.
But did not have anything I really needed on the system so did a fresh install.

More progress...
I am getting to the tty prompt and running drakx11.
I found the monitor [via PlugNPlay] iSS20D
Trying now to set the resolution.
Recovery mode is now blanking screen and showing mouse cursor -- but that is it.

Further Progress..
I turned off the "Automatically starting X..."
Now Normal Boot starts up fine.
I end up with the tty login prompt on each of Ctrl-Alt-F#

Now -- how do I manually start X?
