Post upgrade, boot menu says Cauldron but it isn't!

Postby mailedfist » Dec 5th, '19, 22:29

I've upgraded several systems on-line from the command line without issue according to the instructions in the release notes.

Yesterday, I did the same for another user who wasn't confident doing their own upgrade from 6 to 7.

All seemed to be fine but, on reboot, the graphical boot menu said "Mageia 7 Cauldron" and "Mageia 7 Cauldron (Safe Mode)" for the first two entries.

Using urmpq --list-url, all media seems to be pointing at "7" not "cauldron". All packages end in .mga7. The kernel is the correct one for the latest non-cauldron release.

So, I'm pretty sure it isn't really Cauldron. Has anyone else seen this odd menu behaviour?

The laptop in question is an HP 8570w i7 which originally started with Mageia 5 64-bit, upgraded to 6, and now 7. Boot is via grub, not grub2.

Assuming its not really Cauldron, I'd like to correct the text. Where is this stored please - it isn't in menu.lst?

I've had this occur on two systems, and two others I've been able to update without a problem.

On my two that show 'cauldron' on the boot menu, I've also lost the background picture and the screen is just plain black. Is that the same as yours?

Yes. I'd not thought about it 'til now but the background picture is indeed missing.

Same issue here on one laptop. Turns out it was this issue:

Code: Select all
remove-boot-splash: Format of /boot/initrd-xxxxxxxxxxx.mga7.img not recognized

It appears every now and then, across multiple bugreport, see e.g. https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19049 and https://bugs.mageia.org/buglist.cgi?qui ... oot-splash

As it's only a cosmetic issue, I've not gotten around to look at it again.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

If you are using grub, not grub2, it's this. Needs someone to file a bug report.
