.PDF files not opening

Postby oldbiddie » Aug 31st, '11, 08:03

I find some .pdf files won´t open with Okular. I am then asked to upgrade to the latest Acrobat reader version.
Is there a Okular solution?
TIA

Looks like the form includes some features, highly specific to Acrobat - maybe some data protection...

You mean the pdf files, at the bottom of the page that you linked?
I downloaded all of them, just out of curiosity.
I opened all of them in Ocular, with no problem.

Well, tell your government their PDFs are broken, and tell them what PDF stands for. Emphasis on the Portable ;)

You tried with Evince?

Okular will not open certain documents. It seems that there is an Adobe specific reason as Adobe opens same doc without a problem. I don't remember the exact error message but it had something to do with 'signatures'.

As I said before, in my previous post, I downloaded & opened all of them with Ocular.
But...
I tried to opened them, for a second time, but all of them (except one, IMM 5049) didn't open anymore with ocular.
Instead a single page (the same in all of them) was displayed, about Adobe Reader, and that I should download it, blah-blah, blah-blah...

My first reaction was that something in these files might screwed up my system (sorry for the bad language).
If I can't open it, I can't open it... period. Not open once and then refuse to.

So, I scanned the files with clamtk. All, except IMM 5049, were positive to possible threat: "Heuristics.Encrypted.PDF".
I searched for that term: "Heuristics.Encrypted.PDF", and came upon some forums' threads about clamav & that term.
The said that is a false positive. (I didn't find a different opinion, so I came to my senses again)
These files, they said in the forum, are password protected or encrypted adobe pdf files & only adobe reader can open them.
And 2-3 other pdf readers, not from the Linux world.

Of course, I deleted the files.
Sorry, oldbiddie, I can't help you more.

@oldbiddie: So have you tried with latest Adobe Reader if they open without problems?
I think the problem is with digital signatures inside the PDF, which only Adobe Reader supports :(

You know there's a big difference in that under Linux you only have version 9.4.2 and under windows there's already version 10.1 available?
Like i said, if you want a proper solution, complain at your government and say that you can't open the files properly even with Acrobat Reader.

it´s not my govt and they do tell you to get the latest Acrobat version. But I am not sure it would work witn Mageia and that is why I was asking. I don´t want to muck things up, they work so far so I don´t want to upset it all. Just wondered if there was a Linux equivalent to the new Acrobat

I could open all files, even forms worked out fine. However, I'm running Cauldron with 4.7 Okular.

Just FYI guys, the latest Reader for Linux 9.4.2 opens these files without any problems. So if it is all about Adobe-specific encryption or protection, 9.4.2 does the job. I installed it from .rpm via package installer with no troubles. Mageia 1, KDE 4.6, 64bit.
