Canon MP280 Scanning

Postby grutz » Mar 5th, '12, 18:07

Hi all,
I've got a Canon Pixma MP280 all-in-one printer/scanner. I've been able to install the printer and it prints fine. But I've had a problem scanning.
I've installed the scangear-mp drivers from Canon site, ran scangearmp from the terminal and everything works like normal. But when I click scan in the GUI, the scanner will start scanning, then freezes.

I've searched around and i found someone in the Mageia French language forums with the same issue, but there wasn't any resolution yet.
http://www.mageialinux-online.org/forum/topic-11852+sacnner-canon-mp280-non-detecte.php

Anyone have ideas of how to get it to work? I've reinstalled the drivers, with no luck.

Well, the MP270 is supported by sane: http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON
Also, what is the output of (as root) of the following commands?
Code: Select all
sane-find-scanner
scanimage -L

Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Code: Select all
[root@localhost eric]# sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

Seems to detect my iSight webcam.

Could you please run xsane as root and see if it has the same problem with scanning?

the preview window of xsane shows "Preview built-in iSight:video 0". Clicking scan gives me "Failed to start scanner: Invalid argument"

Should I uninstall the iSight firmware?

OK, and if you run scangearmp as root?
Also, you might want to take a look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1582497

Code: Select all
(scangearmp:8236): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: cannot connect to the session bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

That was spit out 6 times in the terminal.
Eventually an error message pops up saying "Cannot communicate with with scanner. Cable may be disconnected [isn't]or scanner may be turned off [not]. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed."

Thanks for the link, but the advice there was what I've been trying so far. When I was using Ubuntu, scanning worked with the scangearmp command. That's why I'm kind of confused why it isn't working on Mageia. Running Scangearmp seems to be the answer on every other linux forum.

Have you tried the advice of using Gimp instead of xsane?

The problem could also be that to use the scanner you also need the Canon cnijfilter printer driver for your printer.

Same problems in Gimp.
Cnijfilter printer driver is intalled and I am able to print (THANK GOD). I've also got the task-printing-canon pkg installed.

I had a problem in the past with scanning on a Canon MP600. Had to reduce the size of the page some.

hi

Like you I have a canon pixma mp280 but couldn't get it to scan so I was following your post.
I upgraded to Magiea 2 and am now printing and scanning but it wasn't plug and play.

If you still have the printer and still need it to scan but cant get it to I may be able to walk you through the install process as the mp280 is not fully supported by Mageia2 but can be made to work correctly.

Also, I only know how to get it to scan if you are using KDE desktop.

regards

This may, or may not help - when I installed my OKI printer/scanner in Mageia2 I had to modify etc/udev/rules following the instructions in the link below. Scanner detected perfectly after a reboot and using Xsane.

Well, if the scanner is available it shouldn't matter which application you use to scan ...

hi

running xsane in console mode as root will not access the scanner. a whole lot of text comes up. same as grutzś postings. im not on that machine at the moment so I cant give a copy of the log.
running scangearmp in console mode as root finds the scanner and starts the gui but it will not preview or scan

Using the run command with " kdesu scangearmp "gets the starts the GUI and the scanner works every time, both preview and scan - I dont pretend to know why.
As i use KDE desktop i dont know the equivalent in gnome or other desktops.

you can then save the copy as a "png. or pdf " file
unfortunately it cannot be readily accessed by gimp, or dolphin or qwenview. [ permission denied ] as both user and group ownership is root and user has no permission to read.

to access the file use run command "kdesu dolpin / gimp or qwenview , then admin password. then save a copy with a new file name. user and group ownership changes to user!
file can now be accessed by "normal" user programs.

to delete the original file, again run command "kdesu dolphin " then delete.

not a pretty methodology but it works. The canon files have to installed in the correct order- i know it shouldnt make a difference but it does.
I wanted to know If grutz still has the machine or has it been tossed as s/he will have to upgrade to M2 to be able to fully utilize it, but first s/he should read the posts regarding upgrading carefully .

You should not start any graphical program as root, that's the totally wrong way to go. You need to adjust the permissions of the scanner,
usually this is done by editing the relevant udev rule, it should be /etc/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules
Just grep for parts of the pci id of the scanner/printer or copy an existing rule and adjust it to match the id's of your printer.

You can see the id via lsusb for example. Then you grep for the second part of the ID (product id, the first one is the vendor id), if you don't want to search it manually.

An example, lsusb output for your printer/scanner would be something like (these are only made-up values):

Code: Select all
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 04a9:173f Canon Pixma MP280

So you would copy an existing rule, maybe this one:
Code: Select all
# Canon PIXMA MP270
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="173b", MODE="0664", GROUP="usb", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

and adjust it to your id's, should look like this afterwards:

Code: Select all
# Canon PIXMA MP280
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="173f", MODE="0664", GROUP="usb", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

But you can also try to add your user via drakuser to the usb group, maybe that's already enough, but i don't think so.

Hello,

I was curious if LDS Tools or something like Apple Wallet functionality might soon be available for temple recommends.

I no longer carry a wallet as my iPhone case can carry my drivers license and a couple needed bank cards. All other Allstate, Costco and similar cards are stored in my Apple Wallet or in an app like Stocard.

This would especially help when I travel on business and have time to visit a local temple.

Any ideas on such digital device functionality or scanning at temples?
