You should at least provide lspcidrake -v output so it's visible what CPU/chipset/etc. is used. Also, is that a VM or a physical installation?

Can you try if adding nopti as kernel boot option helps ?

I removed the rpm package for kernel-4.14.13, reset the initrd.img and vmlinuz links in /boot and rebooted with kernel-4.14.10 to get the system running again. The system has AMD processors, so a little research found that the nopti boot option doesn't apply. It's a physical desktop system, not a VM.

The update process warned that it had to remove a microcode package before applying the kernel update, but I didn't see a newer microcode update applied. After the system failed, I saw that the microcode update dated 01/08/2018 had not been applied, so I applied that.

I reinstalled the rpm update for kernel 4.14.13. The system is running properly now, so I am closing this topic. All I can surmise is that apparently the latest microcode update didn't get applied, perhaps due to a transient disk error.

Here's the lspcidrake -v output:
Code: Select all
# lspcidrake -v
