[DONE] Installing new software in Mageia 6 on VirtualBox

I have installed Mageia 6 in a VirtualBox VM running on Windows 10. I'm trying to install some additional software to the instance using rpmdrake.

I find that when I go to download and install the new SW (for example, gedit) I get an error message: "Please insert medium labelled 'Core Release'." The installation won't proceed without it.

Naturally I installed Mageia 6 from an ISO that I downloaded from the standard mirror. I don't have media of any kind, and even if I did my VM doesn't have anywhere to insert it.

What can I do?

Sounds like your repositories are not set.

You need to remove the installation media from the media sources:

Jim and isadora, I tried following the instructions in the docs, but it didn't work out.

I unchecked the selections for the CD-ROM media in the Software Management center. I made sure that all the other recommended selections were checked. I clicked "Add" and let it go through the process of updating the mirrors.

However after all of that when I go to select a package to install I'm told that the package I want "cannot be selected." If I go back and re-enable the CD-ROM media, it allows me to select those packages, but then it again requests that I insert the media.

Basically the system seems convinced that the packages reside only on those media. It doesn't want to recognize mirror sources.

Please try again, you forgot "active" after --list-media to only show the repositories that are actually enabled.
Apart from that you seem to have 3 complete sets of repositories, although all from the same mirror which doesn't really make any sense. And you also still have the CD-ROM media but we can't tell whether it's still active or not.

Best do the following: Remove all your repositories, and add a complete set of new ones, but don't use mirrorlist automatism. Check https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_man ... dia_source

Well, you still have the CD-ROM media enabled.

And for the issues you had during installation, where you're told that the package I want "cannot be selected." please show the complete output when you try to install the package via urpmi.

Sorry, but this is turning into one microtask after another with no sign of solving the problem.

I'm just going to erase the VM and find another distro.
