Sudden loss of KDE/Plasma [solved]

Postby andrewholmes » Jul 21st, '17, 08:08

Hi folks,

I did a netinstall of Mageia 6 on my laptop this week and everything seemed to be okay - until last night, when KDE seems to have crashed.

The computer (and Mageia 6) is actually functioning fine, it's just that KDE won't start - I get the Welcome box but the rest of the screen is a blank. :(

So I have been using IceWMSession instead and it's clear there are no other issues.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

Try moving away/renaming the KDE configuration as your user via
Code: Select all
mv ~/.kde ~/.kde-orig

and then try logging in again.

Nope, still the same.

KDE desktop is still not coming up. Welcome window has no buttons.

I may go for a scratch netinstall rather than an update (as this was here).

It's not like it would be the first time, after all... but thanks anyway. ;)

HI folks,

I did a full reinstall of M6 on my old laptop and now the thing seems not only to be working fine (apart from wpa-supplicant, or so it would seem), but faster than before.

Later, I did a full upgrade by repo substitution and it seemed to go well, except there was a conflict of versions of Akonadi (1.13.x vs 1.16.x) and when the former was finally removed, the upgrading went ahead smoothly. The thing is running fine now and I am typing this on it as I sit here.

Akonadi versions co-installing, and the conflicts of deps on them, seemed to be the cause, so I guess this is solved now.

Andrew
