Scan to network share using HP all in one [Solved]

Postby xboxboy » Feb 27th, '17, 02:11

I can not get this to work, and documentation from HP is lacking: I can't even tell what file systems/shares are supported.

I do have a windows 10 machine on the network, but I couldn't get that to work either, although I'd prefer to get it to scan files back to a magiea box I have.

I did try to setup a FTP server on my Magiea box, but I couldn't get much sense with that either.

So, the all in one unit is a HP 8620, with an embedded web server, which generally works well. Scan to email etc works well, and was able to be configured via the web server.

If some one can please guide me it would be most appreciated. I have a picture of the web server screen shot attached.

Slightly related as a workaround, maybe this could help? http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/75-de ... der-server

Regarding your original question, it expects an SMB share. See e.g.

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=110259
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2072247

And yes, the official documentation is lacking quite a bit on some details like the actual protocol...

http://hplipopensource.com/node/334

Worst part is this video from HP support, I've linked directly to the timestamp where they mention details about the shared folder:

Thanks doktor, not just me then :)

I have seen that video..... Basically, HP are saying 'use google for your product support.... We didn't bother, we're too busy wrting firmware that locks out non-genuine cartridges, or building in obsolescence etc"

Frustrating, as it's a really great unit.

I have read, that the scan to network clashes with direct print from phones etc. So I've removed that.

I'll set up a samba share and see what happens... I don't really want to use that work around, but if it's the only option... It's the only option....

Well, using a samba share is not a workaround, but the solution if you don't want to use a "network share" from a windows system.
But the "workaround" I've referred to above may be a more convenient option overall, even when it looks like a hassle to setup.

So I'll try samba.

I've set a share up, and I added my regular user as a samba user. I used the default settings where I was unsure of anything: If you need the same config let me know.

I've then entered those details as best I can, where the pc IP is 192.168.1.12

See the pictures.... It still doesn't work, maybe I'm meant to use the pc's host name? Any pointers most appreciated.

[EDIT] Yes, I have opened samba in the firewall :)

Did you try to mount that samba share on any other box in your network? That's what I'd try first to ensure it works.
And then the question would be, how to debug why it's not working on the printer, maybe it writes something to its event log or so?
And is there an actual error when scanning to that share?

Also, is the share configured as public?

Ok, so I rebooted the Mageia box over night, then the printer was complaining that the directory wasn't writeable.

The samba directory was owned by root, so I opened dolphin as root (yes, I know, should do CLI) and changed the permission for everyone to read and write.

Boom, it works! You have no idea how much paperwork is going to get digitized over the coming months.... Expect a collapse in the price of recycled paper LOL, that's how much is going through the shredder now this scanning is working!

Thanks Doktor

Ok, so the scan to folder works great: I'm going to adjust the folder location etc. for backups. That I can manage.

I'm just wondering should I be locking the samba share down:

https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/server_security.html

My hosted websites have been hacked several times, and I'm always wary of the hacking potential. This machine will be net facing at times, which complicates things, so I'm thinking setting do not allow to the samba share and poking holes in it is a really good idea:

I presume that the those who access the samba share 'can't' access anything outside that folder?

Definitely check the recommendations there.

Basically only anything below the shared folder. But it should probably not be public at all, facilitate the host based access and only allow access for hosts in your local subnet.
And only allow authenticated samba users with a strong password. See https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/ma ... swd.8.html

Personally, I won't allow a network-facing samba share. I firewall SMB off from the net, and use VPNs to permit devices from outside the network to have access to the internal network so they can access print (and other) resources.

Hi Jim, so to firewall smb off from the net, is that done on the samba host, or the net facing router? I was thinking of denying all, for read/write access except for the scanner, is that not enought?

I always firewall SMB at the network facing router, and I may or may not firewall it on internal routers, depending upon my specific requirements.
