New Install not recognising DVDs

Postby Weatherlawyer » Jun 14th, '16, 21:27

I just reinstalled mageia and find it incapable of playing DVDs with VCL why is that?
Hmmm, answering my own question, I installed it with a dvd from linux format. OK so, ho do I free my system up?

Depending on the DVD you may require lib(64)dvdcss2 from the Tainted repository. Installing task-codec-video should install it if you have those medias enabled (& task-codec-audio too if you want)

Is there a thing I can click that says welcome to the second decade?
Or should I start thinking about getting a phone?

Screen: 5.5in full HD AMOLED (401ppi)
Processor: quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820
RAM: 6GB of RAM
Storage: 64GB
Operating system: Android 6.0.1 OxygenOS
Camera: 16MP rear camera with OIS, 8MP front-facing camera
Connectivity: LTE, Dual-Sim, Wi-Fi, NFC, USB-C, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS
Dimensions: 152.7 x 74.7 x 7.35 mm
Weight: 158g

A lot of that is as good or better than this laptop. But I have an idea they don't even use DVDs...
Born 70 years too late or 20 to early.

I just had a look at KDE Mint but the user guide said English with the strangest looking Union Flag I ever saw. What other distributions are there that do a KDE but play nice with old fashioned hardware. Are DVDs hardware or software?

As claire said enable tainted repositories and update your system.
One of the updates will be a version of VLC that can play commercial DVD's.

Mageia control centre:

Local Live core
Local non free
Mirror list core release
Mirror list non free release
Mirror list non free updates
Mirror list core 32bit release ?
Mirror list core 32bit updates ?

Mirror list tainted release
Mirror list tainted updates
I never noticed.

That bloody tin-horn DVD seller, why do I keep that crap?

Thanks all.

The mageiawelcome applet which always shows up after login unless you disable it offers to enable tainted and nonfree repos and to install the necessary codec packages, so yes that button exists but you didn't press it.

Please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [SOLVED], thanks

I am still not able to view my DVDs. I install Noscript first thing when i install an OS so that may have accounted for the problem. I only watch old films to relax after some intensive research and I need a mindwipe.
. i am unhappy with the state o play and still considering Mint or some other OS.
. I have a number of computers all I have to do is setrthem up but this is the only one capable of 64 bit work.

What does noscript, a browser plugin, have to do at all with watching DVDs ?

And did you install lib(64)dvdcss2 from the Tainted repository as suggested by claire above? What error message do you get in vlc when you open the DVD?
