Mageia CD not recognized

Postby rtspitz » Dec 29th, '15, 07:32

I wanted to install more games onto my little ASUS 1215B with Atom dual core. I selected some and it just said failed. The Mageia 5 CD is showing as an audio CD. I ejected and put it back and the audio selector comes up. I browse the thing and it shows something very different than what my main workstation shows which is running Win7Ult. Something is fishy. Any suggestions?

We have no CD image from which you can install packages. What CD image did you use in particular?

Re: Mageia CD not recognized

Postby yankee495 » Mar 11th, '16, 06:36

I'm running Mageia 5 x64 with all updates and KDE. I have seen this problem for a year or more. It was also in Mageia 4. I have been tracking this problem down for a couple of days and here is what I know. First the monitor results.

I first inserted the Mageia 5 DVD and it identified the DVD correctly (note the size 3918528512 and OpticalNumDataTracks: 1) :

Code: Select all
[john@yankeedt ~]$ udisksctl monitor

Removed NO Disc info from changing disks.

Then I inserted an Audio CD which it identified correctly (OpticalNumAudioTracks: 12 Size: 305750016):

Code: Select all

Removed NO Disc info from changing disks.

Then I reinsert the Mageia 5 DVD and it says it is an Audio CD (Note the size 3918528512 and OpticalNumAudioTracks: 1)

Code: Select all
19:11:26.944: /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/drives/ATAPI___iHAS124___E_3524665_2C8415505654: org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Drive: Properties Changed

  Size:                 3918528512

It will not mount:

Code: Select all
[john@yankeedt ~]$ udisksctl mount -b /dev/sr0
Object /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sr0 is not a mountable filesystem.

But it does mount with udisks:

Code: Select all
[john@yankeedt ~]$ udisks --mount /dev/sr0
Mounted /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/sr0 at /media/disk

I can also verify the disk contents:

Code: Select all
[root@yankeedt john]# blkid /dev/sr0
/dev/sr0: UUID="2015-06-15-21-10-25-00" LABEL="Mageia-5-x86_64" TYPE="iso9660" PTUUID="43f19278" PTTYPE="dos"

So, after you insert an Audio CD and remove it, KDE thinks the Mageia 5 DVD is an Audio CD. The only thing I can find to fix it is to insert a burned movie DVD which it does ID corrently. After inserting the movie DVD it will once again ID and mount the Mageia 5 DVD. If you insert another Audio CD, it does the same thing and a movie DVD will fix it again. Rebooting doesn't do anything between disk changes. I tried Audio CD/Mageia DVD over and over and over and nothing changes it except inserting the movie DVD. I tried ejecting it from Dolphin Places and from the Device Notifier etc. I tried "Release Audio CD" by right clicking it in Dolphin Places.

I've went through udev rules, Auto FS and many many other places. I've reinstalled udisk, udisks2, udisks-glue and anything I thought might be related.

It appears the Device Notifier is working right and the Mageia DVD is not being identified properly at the system/kernel level. I don't know exactly how to explain it, but I think the Device Notifier is being told it is an Audio CD so it gives you those options.

It will mount with:

Code: Select all
[john@yankeedt ~]$ udisks --mount /dev/sr0
Mounted /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/sr0 at /media/disk

And after you do that you have two "Open in File Manager" options in Device Notifier and one opens it as an Audio CD mounted in audiocd:/?device=/dev/sr0 and the other opens it as the Mageia 5 DVD mounted in /media/disk/.

I have looked all over the internet for hints & clues but it's really difficult because when you search for "DVD identified as Audio CD" all you get is how to burn a CD and why you can't mount one.

/dev/sr0 is a Lite-on DVD burner. I'm going to see if the same thing happens in my LG Blu-ray burner which is /dev/sr1).

It only happens on /dev/sr0 and NOT on /dev/sr1

Here is the Audio CD:

Code: Select all
22:13:06.754: /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/drives/HL_DT_ST_BD_RE__WH14NS40_K9BC4CJ2053: org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Drive: Properties Changed
  TimeMediaDetected:            1457669586754112
  OpticalNumAudioTracks:        12
  OpticalNumTracks:             12
  OpticalNumSessions:           1
  Optical:                      true
  Media:                        optical_cd
  MediaAvailable:               true
  Size:                         305750016

  Size:                 305750016

Removed NO Disk when I changed disks.

Here is the Mageia 5 DVD:

Code: Select all

I think I may have noticed a difference in the monitor log when you eject the disk by the physical button. That is how I have done them all for these logs and sr1 said:

Code: Select all
 22:20:38.019: /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sr0: Removed interface org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Filesystem

I don't remember seeing that with sr0 but I could be wrong. I'm sorry these are so long but I wanted to list as much information as possible so maybe someone with more experience than me could figure out what is going on. I guess I should have left in the eject info and I'll post that in the next message. I'm not sure but I think sr0 had a different eject message than sr0. I'll lok for bad code tagging and fix it if it's there when I come back to post about the eject messages.

Here is the complete log for sr0. There are 5 steps in the monitor log to help you follow it.

1. Insert Mageia 5 x64 DVD shows OpticalNumDataTracks: 1
2. Eject with the button shows 0 tracks
3. Insert an Audio CD OpticalNumAudioTracks: 12
4. Eject with the button shows 0 tracks
5. Reinsert Mageia 5 x64 DVD shows OpticalNumAudioTracks: 1

Re: Mageia CD not recognized

Postby yankee495 » Mar 11th, '16, 07:21

Here is the complete log for sr1. There are 5 steps in the monitor log to help you follow it. With all disks I get "could not mount the disk" in a popup from the Device Notifier.

1. Insert Mageia 5 x64 DVD shows OpticalNumDataTracks: 1
2. Eject with the button shows 0 tracks
3. Insert an Audio CD OpticalNumAudioTracks: 12
4. Eject with the button shows 0 tracks
5. Reinsert Mageia 5 x64 DVD shows OpticalNumDataTracks: 1

It did seem to get confused. I first made a mistake and put the Fedora DVD in and I restarted the monitor and used the Mageia DVD. I got the could not mount popup and when I clicked "Open in File Manager" it wasn't right. It had a single file and opened as a Fedora disk. After right clicking it in Dolphin and clicking release and reinserting the Mageia DVD came up right. There is something goofy about disk detection and it seems an audio CD cripples it but only on sr0. It's a different drive but it is also the install drive. I'm starting to suspect something different in how the install drive is set up at install time. I'm sorry if you're confused but I am too. It's easy test and if you get what I'm getting maybe you can follow it better.

After a while it popped up with this for sr1. It must have been 2-3-4 minutes.

23:13:17.553: Removed /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/jobs/10

I put the Fedora disk back in sr1 and got the disk ID info. It didn't do any mounting until I clicked "Release" on the DVD in Dolphin and then click Open in File Manager in the notification. It appears the eject button doesn't register that the disk has been removed or changed with a DVD and doesn't make any difference at all with an Audio CD. Also, with an audio CD there isn't a "Release" option. Also, CDs don't have a Filesystem Type and the Mageia DVD is Joliet Extension iso9660 while the movie disk is UDF. Something about the UDF disk makes it forget the audio CD and the Mageia DVD works again.

Re: Mageia CD not recognized

Postby yankee495 » Mar 11th, '16, 16:37

I have a Shuttle SH67H3 that uses an Intel h67 Express chipset and it has an i3-2100 in it. It has a plain DVD -ROM and it does NOT have the problem. It also mounts everything when you insert it. I have a friend who has an AMD setup (Phenom II 965) and his has the same issue as my main desktop. I did change my DVD burner in my desktop but I put in another Lite-on so if that is the problem I wouldn't know it. I'll ask my friend what his burner is. The Mageia 5 on my desktop was an upgrade from Mageia 4 and the Shuttle was a clean install. I don't think this is a wide spread problem or I would find more people complaining about it but it does show up for some people. I'm going to look at what is installed on this Shuttle compared to the desktop.

Here is the udisksctl monitor output. First I put in the audio CD and then the Mageia 5 DVD. The Mageia disk is not the same disk I used on the desktop but I will try it in case it is something related to the way the disk is burned. It was burned on the desktop the same way the other disk was but it may not have been the same version of k3b or other libraries etc. I'm not sure if it was burned under Mageia 4 because I gave my wife a disk. I don't know if I gave her the first one burned with Mageia 4 or one I made after the upgrade. I had shoulder surgery so I'm home and able to do some more testing and I will report back. I'd like a better explanation from the original poster and I know he must have meant DVD, not CD, had to. I'll edit this when I check the DVD I used to test the desktop. I already see this one uses UID 1000 and I am UID 500 on the desktop (StartedByUID: 1000). That may be it right there. I'll check into that too. I just noticed in the message above it lists UID 500 and none of the others do because they didn't auto mount (I assume). The Fedora DVD did auto mount after a while and it is the only one that lists a UID. I'll double check all of that. All of the disks work fine in the Shuttle. Might be the difference in the UID, 500 on the desktop with the problem vs 1000 on the Shuttle with no problems.

I think this is a hardware problem. Like the medium used was not of good quality or the dvd burner used has aged and doesn't write on the medium properly.

I tried other disks and I tried the same disk in another machine that also runs Mageia 5.

I guess it could be the drive but not the burned disk. I have a LG Blu-ray on sr1 and it works with all disks. But sr0 is the problem, a Lite-on DVD burner.
The Lite-on is new, probably not burned 10 disks and I'm sure the LG is what I burned the disk on. But I also tried a Fedora disk I burned on the Lite-in. I am going to swap the cables so that sr0=LG and sr1=Lite-on. if sr0 doesn't work then, it's almost certain it is a software problem with the way sr0 is being ID'd etc.

I was hoping the original poster would come back and tell us more details about what he is running.

My Shuttle SH67H3 does not have the DVD identification problem. As I said above my desktop does and it uses a Lite-on DVD burner for sr0 but it doesn't have the problem on sr1 which is a LG Blu-ray burner. I just put together another Shuttle SH67H3 for my wife and I put an old Lite-on DVD burner in it that I had here. The first thing I checked was to see if it has this problem and it does.

At this point it appears to be Lite-on DVD burners, which are different revisions but both computers using these have the problem. I'm going to check for firmware updates. I had thought there wasn't any for a long time but maybe one has been released. I am not positive but it sure looks like that is the problem and I'd be interested in what brand and model of DVD drive the original poster is using. My desktop has a Lite-on iHAS124 revision E with firmware version 4L08. My wifes Shuttle is iHAS624 B fw GL2A. I'll let you know what else I find out.

I finally replaced my Lite-on DVD burner with an LG DVD burner. It immediately fixed the problem! It appears to me that something about Lite-on DVD burners or their firmware doesn't send the right info to the OS or something when you change the disc.

The drive I put in is an LG Internal 24x Super Multi with M-DISC Support SATA Model GH24NSC0B. Again, I have no clue what the exact problem is or if it is a Mageia bug but simply changing the DVD drive fixed it. My wife's desktop has the same problem with a different model Lite-on burner and it was a fresh install of Mageia 5 so there is no left over configuration or anything like that. I'm just glad to have it fixed and I did put a lot of time in troubleshooting it. All of that info is posted above. I have had this problem for a long time on different versions of Mageia using different DVD drives but they were all Lite-on drives.

I would like to know what DVD drive the original poster was using.
