Which Laptop for Mageia ?

Postby vincentm77 » Sep 16th, '15, 10:27

Hi everyone,

I am wondering whether a specific model or brand can be recommanded for use under Mageia...

On my Lenovo B5400, Mageia5 is running well, Mageia4 was not so easy...

Is there any laptop manufacturer you would recommend ?

I guess that energy management (battery...) is one of the tricky issue when installing linux on a laptop.

Thanks
Vincent

I have the Dell XPS13, now I got the Developer Edition which is factory installed with Ubuntu. That lasted about one week. I'd seen Colin G's blog post, so I went for it and installed Mageia 4. No problems at all, even the touch screen works (why I would want touch on a 13 inch laptop is beyond me)

To be honest, I've fired up a live usb on a few laptops and generally found that they all just work these days. I would think as long as the laptop isn't cutting edge ie. has been on the market for a bit, then drivers for most of it should just be part of the kernel.

Long gone are the nasty old driver days.

I've got Mageia 5 installed on a Dell Latitude e7440, and haven't got a single issue. Everything works perfectly. 7265 AC wireless, 1080P 14" LCD, bluetooth, touchpad, hibernate, sleep all work without a single issue. Absolutely tickled with the laptop and it's pretty small and light to boot (no optical drive, however if that's important). Get good battery life, 4-5 hours of constant work, probably more if I were willing to turn down the LCD a little further.
