[SOLVED] Dual boot in Mageia 5: cannot find Windows 8.1

Postby mystere88 » Jul 21st, '15, 16:34

Hello,

I got Mageia 5 two weeks ago and it looks really great. My machine is a Lenovo with Windows 8.1 pre-installed.
The install process of Mageia 5 was quite straigtforward, but I do think have missed some steps regarding UEFI stuff I cannot understand really. When reading some posts on this forum, some preliminary steps are mentioned like
"Turned off Secure boot and fast start" : I don't know how to do this and did not done it....

So my problem is that Mageia works perfectly, but NO WINDOWS in the list of boot options after install. I have tried to use
drakconf->boot menu to set a Windows boot loader, but it seems wrong and when I click it, it says "cannot find Windows..."

So since 2 weeks I'm ignoring Windows 8.1... this is okay, but well it could be better to go into Windows 8.1 when I need it..

Basically, can you tell me how to enable Windows 8.1. on this Mageia install?? ;)

Below are some info on the system.

you must have turned off secure boot, otherwise you could not have booted to your Mageia install medium.
Turning off fast start is done from Windows when live, never have used win8 so anectdotal information, cant be sure.

from your screenshot you are attempting to use GRUB [legacy] which is not recommended for UEFI.
you need to used GRUB 2, which was the default for a UEFI install.

If all else fails, you can use your install media to re-install the window boot-loader from the rescue menu and re-start.
If that works ok, then you could try to re-install the boot-loader from the rescue menu and see if it then finds both systems

I will give up Windows and just run Mageia. It's all fine. Thanks.
