Version 5 upgrade problem : DONE

Postby chippermon » Jul 18th, '15, 15:00

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me with this problem so I can get my laptop up and running again. Thank you in advance.Yesterday when I started up my Lenovo x140e, running Mageia 4 Gnome flawlessly, I was prompted to upgrade to 5 so I backed up, plugged in and hard wired my internet connection. The operating system did it's upgrade and prompted me for a reboot.

Upon reboot I see the screen where I am able to pick Mageia 5 safe mode and the various kernels, Then I see the new stellar cloud with cauldron splash screen and after the cauldron fills with bubbles the screen goes black. At this point I am unable to use the machine.

When I try to open under an old kernel the same thing happens. So I open in safe mode and it welcomes me to emergency mode. I login and type journalctl -xb to view the system log. These are the commands that appear in red:

Code: Select all
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: Unsupported brightness interface, please contact ibm-acpi-devel@lists.sourceforge.net

kernel: kvm: disabled by bios

systemd(1): Failed to start Load Legacy module configuration

This is all I can do so far on my own. i am pretty good at following instructions. I will certainly type code if told what to do. I am open to all suggestions.

best regards

Chip

With failsafe mode, it's normal that you get "welcome to emergency mode".

chippermon wrote:Then I see the new stellar cloud with cauldron splash screen and after the cauldron fills with bubbles the screen goes black. At this point I am unable to use the machine.

Ok, the screen is black, but does the box still react at all? E.g. numlock key, or switching to another tty via Ctrl+Alt+F2 to F8 ?

If you boot normally, and press Esc key so that you see the boot messages, what is the last step that you see?
And can you also please check what I've posted here: viewtopic.php?p=57978#p57978

Yes, the machine is responsive. I am able to ctrl alt F2 and bring up a console. I am able to log in and have access to a # prompt.

When I press esc during startup, the last thing I can see as it flies by is " started accounts services"

Sorry, I meant $ prompt on tty2.

I reviewed the link you sent. I tried the command startx under su and still no gui

Sorry but you have to be a little more verbose. What happens in particular?
Does an X session start at all, or what are the error message? What does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say?

So an X server is already running, that's why you cannot start another one.

Simply attach it here. Or copy it to some external drive and attach it from another operating system.
Do you have windows or another linux or some linux live cd/dvd available?

It loos like you have a similar problem as described in the other thread.
You would also have to boot normally, switch to another tty and run
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab > journal.log
and attach that here.

I am communicating with you on a Mandriva laptop right now. I have a PCLOS PC also that I can work with. The laptop in question does not have an optical drive so I will have to download a live dvd iso and transfer to a usb pen drive. In my uneducated state I have already downloaded the clasic version because I read on the wiki that I should use that instead of live when upgrading. I will dl a live version but as I said no optics here.

It loos like you have a similar problem as described in the other thread.
You would also have to boot normally, switch to another tty and run

Code: Select all
journalctl -ab > journal.log

and attach that here.

Under my profile in tty2 I ran the code and ended up with
Code: Select all
-bash: journal.log: permission denied

So I switched to root by entering su and under the root prompt # I entered the code and ended up with this

Code: Select all
#

It just brings me back to another command prompt

By the way, thank you for your help with this

You need to run that command as root, so on the prompt you described in the second step.
You can directly login as root, no need to login as user and then use su.

I have done this with the same result. This is exactly how it looks in the tty

Code: Select all
(root@ChipsLenovoPC ~) # journalctl -ab > journal.log
(root@ChipsLenovoPC ~) #

This is what happens when I enter the command. It returns me to the command prompt.

Yep, it wrote all the output in the file /root/journal.log which you should attach here.

You can run
Code: Select all
cat /root/journal.log
to display the contents. Or copy it to /tmp where it's readable by everyone via
Code: Select all
cp /root/journal.log /tmp

Okay,

following your instructions I can now see the entire file. I would like to put it on a thumb drive to transfer over to this computer so I can post the results. Reading through the help command I thought I could do this

Code: Select all
cp /root/journal.log/tmp --target-directory=sdb

but it failed to access sdb. no such file or directory.

Is there another command I can use to transfer the file so I can post it here?

well, I have scoured the internet to try to figure out how to transfer the journal.log file to a usb drive so I can post it here and through different variations of commands I have been totally unsuccessful. I am able to open a tty and enter commands. I am able to read the journal file. I am incapable of transferring the file to a usb stick. The laptop recognizes the usb sticks. Names them accordingly. sdb sdc etc. I can change directory to the usb sticks.

In frustration, I have downloaded the live dvd so I can access my hard drive. I have purchased a dvd drive that I can attach with a usb port. I boot up and the optical drive is recognized as the first drive to be read. I am given a choice of live boot or install Mageia 5 or boot from hard disk. I choose live. Even with this setup It doesn't even allow me to boot into live mode. This is what happens:
Code: Select all
mount: special device /dev/sr0 does not exist
losetup: /live/media/loopbacks/distrib-lzma.sqfs: failed to set up loop device: No such file or directory
mount: /dev/loop0: can't read superblock
mount: /dev/loop0: can't read superblock
dracut Warning: /sysroot has no proper rootfs layout, ignoring and removing offending mount hook

dracut Warning: Can't mount root filesystem

Generating "/run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt"
You might want to save "/run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt" to a usb stick or /boot after mounting them and attach it to a bug report.

To get more debug information in the report,
reboot with "rd.debug" added to the kernel command line.

Sropping to debug shell.

dracut:/#

I have also tried the install option and that won't work either. I am not sure where to go from here. Can anyone help me please?

Do you do this under Mandriva/PCLOS or under Mageia in the emergency shell?

For the latter, you would need to mount the usb drive manually after plugging it in via
Code: Select all
mount /dev/sdXn /media
cp /root/journal.log /media

Or, as you said you can change into the directory where the usb drive is mounted, you only need to do the second step. Simply copy the file there.
General syntax is
Code: Select all
cp /source/file /destination/folder/or/file

You can't attach pictures or anything straight from your PC.
You first need to upload them to some place at the internet, like for example Imgur.
Then you can use a link given.

It seems I am unable to mount the usb.

I have tried several different ones

I am in tty2. I insert the usb drive. This is the code that appears
Code: Select all
(    391.473140) sd 2:0:0:0; (sdb) No caching mode page found
(    391.473140) sd 2:0:0:0; (sdb)  Assuming drive cache: write through

They all basically say

Code: Select all
# mount /dev/sdb /media
mount: /dev/sdb/ is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so

The usb drive needs to contain a filesystem. If that is the one usb drive with which you installed Mageia,
it does not contain a writable filesystem, but only an ISO9660 filesystem (similar to a CD/DVD).

But in any case, I don't understand why you don't access the file from e.g. Mandriva or PCLOS and post it here?

because they are os on other machines, i have to transfer the file from my mageia machine, which is only legible through a tty, to a usb to post it here from another machine. I am able to copy files to these usb drives with other machines so clearly I don't understand the proper commands in order to do this seemingly simple task. I am trying to understand. I will continue to try to work on it.

But to review. I was running Mageia 4. An upgrade notice appeared on my screen upon start up. I followed the prompts for the file transfer and upgrade. When asked to reboot I did so. When the machine rebooted I ended up with a running machine but no GUI. Just a dark screen.

Can you plugin the usb drive on any of the other machines, and write files to it with some file manager? Is it auto-detected? Then it should be fine.
If you plug it in to your Mageia machine, be sure to mount the partition with the filesystem and not the whole device.
mount /dev/sdb1 /media

alternative options include:

- if you have local network access, start ssh daemon (
Code: Select all
service sshd start
on one of your other machines) and copy the file to that other machine via secure copy:
Code: Select all
scp journal.log your_username_on_remote_box@IPadress:~/

- if you have internet access from Mageia, upload the file directly to some pastebin service
Code: Select all
urpmi fpaste
cat journal.log | fpaste

and then post the obtained URL here where the log has been uploaded.
