[Solved] Install on N2830?

Postby petedan10 » Jun 27th, '15, 11:29

Has anyone installed current Mageia on Intel N2830 or cimilar CPU? I have read that some Atoms are not exactly Linux-friendly and would like to know if anyone has tried this and how well it worked.

Also what environment would be suggested? I think KDE would be too much for this processor but again would like to know if anyone has actually tried it and how it went.

I am asking because there are some very affordable notebooks based on that chip and wouldn't mind getting one provided Mageia will work fine on it :)

Seems it needs a microcode update to work with linux which partly depends on the mainboard being used, see https://communities.intel.com/thread/54149
But in general it works with linux, see e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_S20-30

Maybe you should get a Mageia 5 live media and test the notebook you want with that one.

Hmmm, I would expect Lenovo to be more Linux-friendly (regarding the second link) so I am not surprised.

I also see many models based on the newer N2840, would that be a safer bet?

Huh? I just posted a link to the arch site and mentioned it's working. Why do you think Lenovo is linux-unfriendly?

Sorry, I didn't phrase is correctly: I think Lenovo has a reputation for being Linux-friendly, so I am not surprised their machine works with Linux where others are reported to have problems.

Mageia works very well on this processor and certainly much better than Windows! KDE works fine though lighter environments are even snappier. But still, KDE works like a charm.

I had some trouble with the live media so I opted for a test installation to test the waters without giving it much thought.

Yup, I've had/have various distros on N2830's and N2840's, and very rarely had issues other than chromebooks because of the audio used on most of their boards (which can be made to work, but can be a PITA).
