[solved] synaptics failure

Postby wobo » Jul 20th, '11, 23:41

After todays updates everything was nice but then my laptop went into sleep mode - waking it up shows the usual dark screen (Gnome) with the task bar. Moving the mouse to show the entry field for the password to unlock the screen let the screen flicker, nothing more. I killed the x-session (Ctrl+Alt+BS twice) and logged in to the konsole. "startx" seemed to start the x-server, I see the flash of the nvidia driver but then x crashes giving back an error:
Code: Select all
(EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8
(EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad unable to query/ initialize Synaptics hardware
(EE) PreInit returned 11 for "SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad"

So, something crashed the synaptics driver.

I don't recall reading anything on the -dev list - does anybody have the same problem?

After updates and reboot all is working again. Updated packages:
Code: Select all

Hmm, none of these seem to be related, at least for me.

Hi Wolfgang,

I had the same symptoms yesterday with a cauldron i586. Flickerung screen when trying to deactivate the locked gnome-shell. Then after reboot the whole installation went belly up - gdm won't start, system hangs. No possibility to do anything except a forced shutdown.
To find the cause i did a fresh install of a i586 cauldron LXDE System from the dual arch cd. Update to cauldron - everthing's ok.

Then i switched from nouveau to nvidia.

Bang!

It seems to be the nvidia driver ...

cheers,
Bernd
Now after my words of profound wisdom, I'm going back to procrastinating.

@wobo: check xorg.conf, ideally it shouldn't have any references about the touchpad, as it should be configured on the fly by udev, IIUC.

Well, as I wrote, the problem has vanished after yesterdays updates.
There is no reference to the touchpad in xorg.conf, I already checked that.
The updates before the problem occurred included an udev update, so it may have been caused by that, but I don't see a reason in yesterdays updates which eliminated the problem.
( /me should not dwell on vanished problems too long!)
