Mageia4 upgrade issues / netbook power problem

Postby Tonythetiger » Jan 29th, '15, 14:02

In 2010 I purchased an Asus Eee PC P CPW-BK025. It came loaded with Windows but a friend took off Windows and installed Mageia 3. I was happy with this until I was informed that there were no more updates for this and to download Mageia 4. I did this and while I encountered some problems which I resolved, 3/4 of the way through the download the screen went blank which was then followed by a message "A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator." and possibly "gnome-fallback." A few times after this when I powered up it got to the page that showed Mageia3 then went blank. From here on in I may have made a mistake by disconnecting the power supply which may have resulted in the battery becoming exhausted. I have been in contact with Asus who advise me that while Asus supports Linux there may be a problem with Mageia 4.
I have found a video on Youtube which gives 3 procedures you can try to restore power to your battery. I have tried removing the battery and the power cord, then keeping your finger on the power button for 60 seconds then replacing the battery and reconnecting the power cord(I did it 3 times without success.) The next one is to check for a faulty ramstick. This involves taking off the back of the machine. Would you believe I've managed to remove 2 of the screws however the remaining 2 screws won't budge but I'll keep on trying.. I would like to have Mageia 4 but if it is causing problems I would be happy to go back to Mageia 3. If anyone could help me with this problem I would be eternally grateful.

Well, there seem to be two issues here, and you seem to mix them up.

If your laptop doesn't power up at all, that's not an issue caused by Mageia but a physical problem with your netbook and should be handled by Asus.
And as long as your box doesn't at least power up to BIOS or actually boots, we cannot really help you with the Mageia issue.

If you remove the battery and unplug the power cord, then press the power button for a few seconds (or tap it a few times to drain residual current),
and connect the power cord, does the power LED light up? Can you check the power cord via a voltage meter (or better have it checked by a local electrician)?
Or maybe you have some universal power cord available that you could try instead?
