[SOLVED] Unable to boot into Mageia 5 Beta

Postby mrigs » Jan 27th, '15, 04:35

Hi,

I have a dual boot system with a fresh install of Mageia 5 beta and Windows Vista. The booting seems to be fine, but after I run a software update on the beta, the boot seems to get stuck at this screen (attached). I have tried a fresh beta install a few times now and every time I have been stuck at this screen after running a software update.

Any help in solving this please?

-best regards,

Hi,
I had the same problem last night, kind of a panic there...
It happened just after updating some x11 packages. I am using an nvidia card.

Here is how I could recover:
- Boot with the fail safe option
- type root password to get access to the console
- type: drakx11 (commande line configuration of the graphical server)
- configure and test a different video setting: try vesa or free drivers
- this enables mageia to start again
- new updates regarding x11 driver and latest nvidia were available, I installed them.
- go to the Mageia Control Center / Hardware / Set up the graphical server
- set up prefered values using the nvidia driver

I hope this will get you out of trouble,

(edit: corrected spelling of command drakx11, thanks for the feedback mrigs!)

If you're running cauldron in daily use I'd recommend subscribing to the dev mailing list.
https://ml.mageia.org/wwsympa-wrapper.fcgi/info/dev

This was probably due to one of the nvidia kernel modules, which had failed to build.
Some older nvidia hardware will now use the nvidia340 driver instead of nvidia-current.

Hi claire,
Thank you, I subscribed to the list.
Does this mean I could have learned about the issue before doing the update? so I could have waited until it was resolved?

Yes - someone will bite the bullet first, usually it's somebody else :)

That's why it's written in bright red.

This worked like a charm Symbioxy. Except that the command is drakx11 and not drakex11 [had to google it out]. Thanks much for biting the bullet first and helping out here! :)

Thank you for the additional input, claire and doktor5000.
