Updating os-prober

Postby ohmysql » Nov 11th, '14, 07:26

Reading https://doc.mageia.org/installer/2/en/content/setupBootloaderExpert.html#usingExistingBootloaderGRUB2 it says the following:

Stop Press: The bug is fixed in os-prober-1.53 released on 8th May 2012. So now, upgrading to the new version in your GRUB2 installation is the preferred solution.

I assume this means to update os-prober within GRUB2. But how do I do that? I downloaded os-prober and I've done a "make" on the files, but I can't do "make install." Not sure how to proceed. Help?

oh my SQL!!!

That is the documentation for Mageia 2, which is already end of life and not supported anymore.
In Mageia 4 we have os-prober 1.63:
Code: Select all
┌─[doktor5000@Mageia4]─[17:27:13]─[~]
└──╼ urpmf -f --name os-prober
os-prober-1.63-2.mga4.x86_64
os-prober-1.63-2.mga4.i586

Also, as you crossposted this same issue to another thread, where does it say that "make" or "make install" on os-prober source code is the preferred way to update it?

That might be, but this part of the manual is referring to using other older versions of GRUB2 (such as in Ubuntu) to load Mageia of whatever flavor,2-4. Either way, some instruction on how to update os-prober not from repositories, since these haven't yet been updated in Ubuntu/Mint (and I'm not sure how to make that happen), would be very helpful!

You have put this issue in 2 different topics. It's crazy answering to you on both.
Not good to dredge out an old topic especially if it is not too related to your issue.
Choose one and stick with it.

Now, you said you want to update os-prober.
To help you better, it is good to tell us why you want to upgrade os-prober.
What problem exactly do you face in wanting to do this.

Also through the course of your posts (always better to lay out everything in your first post so it's clearer), we get the impression you want it 'actually' in Linux Mint.
What OS bootloader exactly boot up all OS's? (what OS grub is set to mbr?)

If you are not clear in telling us, most of us will ignore your posts as we do not exactly know what you want to do.
