Hello, my name is Adam, 20 years old student of Computer Science of University Marie Curie-Sklodowska (hence Mageia has roots in France, probably everyone knows Marie Curie-Sklodowska :)) and I come from Poland.

I have been using Linux since 2008, my first distro was Ubuntu 8.04. Few weeks ago I have removed Windows and now I have Mageia only :).
I don't have very big experience with Linux but I would like to give something to Mageia. In the future I will donate my favourite distro - it's Mageia of course :)

I love you! :)

Hello to every one on the forums, :D

This is my introduction and first impressions of Mageia.

First off, I must say that, so far, I am impressed with the work and effort that you/community have put into your distribution. This is the first time that I have used this branch of Linux. I started to use Linux systems around 2010. In Linux, I started out with Ubuntu/Debian (which I have been very disappointed with) and after that I got the distro-hopping bug and have since explored OpenSUSE (not my cup of tea) and arch based systems, Manjaro, KaOS, and Chakra (which have been my favorite until the gpu driver issues with AMD started to misbehave). With all the environments that I have used, I like KDE the best. I have been having a difficult time finding a distro that caters to my needs. So far, as to date, Mageia has a lot of potential. It is fast, apps haven't been crashing or won't start, and the desktop doesn't have that heavy feeling that SUSE and Debian based distros have. Of course I have a lot to learn about Mageia, it is almost like starting from the beginning, but I am looking forwards to figuring it out.

However, there are some issues/questions that I have regarding the system/tools and installation. I have selected the extra, non-free, and tainted repos, but I couldn't find certan fonts like ttf-ms-fonts. Do I have to download them and install them manually? I could not find aspell-en or hunspell-en. Are they automatically installed? Next was the terminal editor, I am accustomed to using nano, but when I typed the command, I got an error, and I couldn't find it in the control center. Is there an easy to use alternative, what is used? Another program that I noticed that wasn't in the repos, that I want to use, was the plasma applet Homerun-small-menu; the full-screen was there but the small wasn't. How do I get it? In addition, youtube-dl was not available as well. Am I missing something?
Something that bothers me is the mouse cursor not being the same in all application, especially in the control center. After I changed the mouse, I rebooted the system for it to take full effect, but it still shows the old mouse cursor when it is in the control centers window. Is there a way to make it consistent throughout the system's theme? That is one thing that I hated about GTK system's UI, is their inability to be consistent in the themes, icons, and cursors. If someone can inform me of a link or let me know how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it.
Furthermore, I had an issue with steam. After I had agreed to the terms of service, I kept getting a “can not connect to the internet to update” error. I know that my internet connection was fine, because I was listening to music on youtube while I was doing the installation. I had to restart my computer to get it to connect, and even after that, I had the same error pop up six times before it finally finished installing updates. I hope it won't lose connection while I am playing my games.
In addition, my other Linux partition is not showing. Grub displays my Mageia and windows partitions, but it doesn't show my Chakra partition. I even did “update-grub” in the terminal and rebooted, but it still isn't there.

In conclusion, I want to thank you for the ease of installing programs and the system, although it took me a few times to get it right with the system install. There where several things that Mageia got right the first time where other distros failed.
For one, my mouse worked right away, and not just in the live install mode. I have a RAT 3 gaming mouse. I have found out that because of having the propriety drivers installed for my gpu, the mouse doesn't work by default. I have to make a .conf file in order to make it work, and even that it doesn't work completely right. The only time it has worked by default is when I had free drivers installed. But my desktop it is my work station and gaming rig and the free drivers do not work for what I need it to do.
The other thing that worked was my sound card, that to, I would have to make a .conf or .asoundrc file to make it the default. I have a AMD Radeon HD-7970 gpu that has a hdmi output, so Linux systems set it as the default sound card; so annoying! But with Mageia, I just had to make my sound card the default in the kmix settings and it saved it. I even checked it with “alsamixer” in the terminal and it showed all my speaker channels; I am very happy about that. :D
The other thing, that is most important to me, is the graphics driver/card which worked like they are supposed to. In Chakra, I have to use raster mode without the composite effects in order to used the catalyst drivers, and have a working desktop without tearing and fragmenting; KaOS was the same. In Manjaro, composite worked for the most part, it had its glitches here and there, but with every update, the drivers would break and render my system useless. So I am very happy to see that special effects work like they are supposed to. On top of that, the catalyst drivers were easy to install. I have yet to see how it preforms while gaming, but according to how snappy the desktop is, I think that it will be fine.
Thank you for your patients in reading my post and in the future when I have questions on how to fix or do things properly.

Cheers!

Hello People. I have no IT training. I just love messing with computers. And I like to learn new stuff. I've tried Windows (all); Mac (3versions); Several linux systems. I like Mageia. I've got a shedfull of broken computers so I might disappear but I'm hoping to stay around. I intend to be around long enough to reformatt the kids and grandkids computers with Mageia anyway. I haven't really any special skills & the old grey matter doesn't function as well as it should but in my last life I was educated, trained, published, hung in galleries & called all sorts of names. I would describe myself as a private crackpot who can cuss in a few languages. I'll have a crack at anything you care to throw my way. Can't promise I'll be much good but I'll have a go. And I hear a voice rumbling from the heavens "Never Volunteer Young Lady; Never Volunteer". My computer says I'm worldwide which isn't true because I hardly ever leave the house. Maybe enough said. THANKS for having me!

Well... I'm theoldrailroader and one of my nastier habits is computers. I've been lazy for the last few years and apples make you that way. I've decided to get back to some hands on and would do without before I used windoz again. So here I am. Learning something new. I don't consider myself stupid nor dumb... I do seem to be very ignorant on todays software and hardware. I'm very sure I will ask some very 'dumb' questions so please bare with me. Something I will repeat in the future: Thank you for your guidance as you have it to give and more for your patience.

So here I am... thirty something nerdy east-european woman, whose new laptop hated her prevoius distro of choice (SuSE for 8 years, I miss it). So I'm giving Mageia a try since some months and so far I like what I see*. :)

* 0th it works.
1th it installed.
2nd it installed mc without asking.
3rd it works.
4th it has decent software selection without third party repos.
Did I mention it works?

Hi, my nameis Pablo Tozzetto, from Argentina. I works in a company that made an administrative system for other companys. That system is only for Windows, but in the las year our clients ask we about run the system in linux. Because licenses are really expensive. Originally i tryed Mandriva, but now i think mageia could be our distribution. I hope to found answers to my problems implementing the system in mageia. :P (Y)

greetings,

I was very excited about this distribution when I saw it. I cut my teeth on Mandrake 7.0 and used various mandrake and mandriva permutations. I got tired of power packs and the financial problems and drifted off into ubuntu forks. I am happy to be running this distribution and it is running well.

Thanks so much for everyone's hard work.

It seems that an introduction is expected if not required. Mine goes like this:

Hi, I'm Michael, Linux user exclusively since 2006. My first introduction to Linux was around 2000, first Mandrake and then, later on, Mandriva.
Mandriva 2011 was very disappointing to me so I switched to Mageia, and I'm currently using Mageia 4.

I'm a Danish citizen and I used to design, build and maintain electronic equipment in the hearing aid industry, now retired.
