Frozen Mouse Pointer prevents install of Mageia 4.1

Postby Thebunyip » Jul 2nd, '14, 06:56

Hi All,

On a PC based on a Gigabyte 970A D3P motherboard with a Logitech USB mouse Mageia 4.1 fails to install as the mouse pointer is frozen on initial screen. (The tab key enables selection of the first few screens but when a mouse selection is required the install can not continue. Everything seems OK except for the mouse pointer. MD5sum of downloaded ISO checked as OK, Verified by K3b after burning to DVD.

The system currently runs an old Debian based distribution without problems. (UEFI is OFF in BIOS)

A few Live CD distributions have been tested with mixed results.
Mageia 4.0 - frozen mouse pointer
Ubuntu 13.10 - frozen mouse pointer
OpenSUSE 13.1 - working mouse pointer would therefore expect to be able to install.

Is there any possibility of overcoming this problem or should I wait for Mageia 5.0 and hope it is fixed there?

Hi

I too have on occasion had this issue, but not with Mageia - go figure!
For the record I have MS keyboard + mouse with Gigabyte P8B75M-LX mobo
I had to go find a p/s2 mouse , so if you have one stuck in a drawer somehere, could you give that a try?

check IOMMU is enabled in the bios, see my post in the sticky, this is the board i
had many issues with.

there is a good chance that once you do enable iommu that usb 3 ports will no longer work.

but for those usb2 ports you will require this option on.

theres a whole lot of moaning on various threads about gigabyte and this board (including its subnames/numbers) and usb/iommu issues.

examples:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159467

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2114055

its not just the usb2 ports by the way, you will have network issues as well.

Hi wintpe,

Thanks for the info and the links. I have something else to try before using the enable IOMMU ploy. Unfortunately not for a couple of weeks. I may have to "downgrade" to the 32bit option.

Looks like I bought a less than ideal MB.

yes and no

yes the 970 seems to have attracted more problems that most, but the iommu issue is
causing me issues on other boards as well, even my 3 year old asus crosshair v formula since the release of the
3.10.44 kernel, now needs iommu for usb to work. in mga3.

the mga99 evo 2 from asus also seeing usb 3.0 issues.

I have not attempted a clean install on it since it has not been necessary, but I am experiencing no difficulties with my ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2 motherboard, which is one year old (for me) this week.

Hi Jim

Im well aware that you have practically the same hardware as me, the sabertooth V1 and V2 are sister boards to the crosshair v formula r1 and r2

mines the V1.

ive been seeing the iommu issue since that gigabyte board i mentioned in the main thread.

but my r1 board did not have the issue, and I thought this was down to newer uefi bios's , but this latest kernel update 3.10.44 left me with several devices on the usb bus not being detected.

I had left iommu off in the bios as otherwise i was getting the boot time benign error about disabling interupts, (not got the message to hand while i write this).

I had to switch it back on before those usb devices, (card reader, bluetooth, logitec webcam) would be detected again.

are you running mga4 or 3. Perhaps its an mga3 issue, thats fixed in a later 4 kernel.

Im not sure yet, but three similar amd 9xx boards, giving three similar problems, you have either fixed the issue with mga4 or
there's a slightly different usb chipset on that sabertooth board, or maybe a bios fix from asus.

and im yet to get conformation from Thebunyip if the symptom he has seen, is the same as i describe, so lets see how that plays out.

There were some issues that were particular to the 3.10 kernel. I don't remember the details, but I encountered them when I was hacking that kernel for a project, and I saw the messages on the kernel developer's forum. I do not recall having any issues myself during the short period of time when I ran the 3.10 kernel before upgrading to Mageia 4 - and I can assure you that I would have spotted missing USB devices immediately.

So, my information is negative; it works here and I can't tell you what your problem might be. I am running Mageia 4 with the 3.12 kernel. There certainly could be a difference in bios; the R2 was pretty new when I purchased it, so I presumably have an early R2 bios. Since I have had no issues at all - and I do mean none; this is my most reliable system EVER - I have not flashed the bios. I don't know how to get bios info without rebooting and you will forgive me if I don't want to do that right now.

I do have a new video card and a new hard drive (for expansion) arriving on Monday so I will be rebooting next week and I can check then.

For what it's worth it's possible to do an install with just the keyboard.

I did such an install of Mageia4.0 on an old old laptop with a dead touch-pad when the USB mouse didn't work.
It took a little experimenting with the tab key, arrow keys, space bar and enter key but everything that seemed to require a mouse could be done with just the keyboard.

On boot of the system after the install the mouse did work but your mileage may vary.
