[Solved] Can't log-in, log in screen got messed up

Postby AndrewAmmerlaan » Apr 8th, '14, 17:25

I rebooted my computer and the log in screen suddenly was different, on the left there was the time and on the right a message select user and enter password, the problem is that I can't find any way to select user and enter password. I did install some packages before reboot, but I can't recall installing a different log in screen. Anybody know how to log in with this log in screen, or how log in without the log in screen or how to change the log in screen back?

Your login screen looks similar to which from https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Display_Managers ?

No it doesn't, I uploaded a screenshot in the attachments. If I could get into the command line from the log in screen I could log in and than startx but I don't know how

I have some progress, by booting into safe mode and entering my root password and then entering kdm, I can log in as root, now all I have to do is remove the package that is causing the problem, if only I knew which one.

If you've managed to start X after booting into safe mode, start the Mageia Control Centre, go to the "Boot" tab, and click on "Set up display manager". This should tell you what is currently selected, and allow you to change it.

If you can't start X, at the command prompt type
Code: Select all
cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop

I solved it, the package that was causing the problem was sddm, It had dependencies for some other packages that's how it got onto my system unnoticed. sddm is some display manager, it actually look pretty cool.
