Upgrade from M3 to not quite right

My Mageia 3 setup was totally current at the time (3/15/14) I first tried the network upgrade but sources weren't available so I used the 64-bit DVD. Everything seems to have upgraded but I can't run any of the DRAKCONF apps or run 'su' anymore - I've had to switch to Ctrl-Alt-2 to get a console to log in as root and finish the "urpmi --update --auto-select".
I have all the current drak-related files:

From konsole I can launch draknetcenter as regular user (member of 'users') but any of the others I see a quick glimpse of a dialog box about authentication and then I get:

This incident has been reported.

I have the IOMMU enabled in the chipset and otherwise have been running well until the 'upgrade' - did I miss in preparation for the upgrade?

what happens if you run urpmi --auto-update ?

As just a user:

bash: urpmi: command not found

I can't 'su' to root so I have to switch to a console to log in as root and then I can run 'uprmi --update --auto-update' with no problem

since then have you rebooted the system?

As root 'urpmi --update' is adding 231 additional packages and doing some configuration - I guess I'll see what the outcome is in about 9 hours (off to work)

Yes, many more files were updated but I still can't launch the Control Center - the brief flash of an 'Authentication Required' window before it disappears, I still can't 'su' from a konsole either but now after I log in my display is filled with many (20+) kblankscrn.kss windows that is rather time-consuming to get rid of.
I'm hoping that I don't have to go back to doing an 'install' thereby wiping many of my setups so any ideas where I should look?

open a console,not using ctrl+alt+2.
If you cannot run as "root " from console "drakconf ", you probably will indeed have to re-attempt the dvd upgrade.
if you choose to dvd upgrade, first run through, dont format /home if you have one, and see if that cures any of your problems. it should only take a few minutes
if the first run through didnt fix, save any data and do a clean install.

I tried the 'upgrade' route again and even installed a new user - that person didn't access to the Control Panel either, a quickly flashing 'Authentication Required' before it disappeared. Thank you for the link to the kblankscrn issue: even though I don't have access to the control panel at least I can control some of the propagation of those screens.

I'm gonna put 'RESOLVED' in the topic so we don't waste anymore time with this. When I get annoyed enough I'll try a full install but if I have issues like this on another machine I'll dredge it back up.
