Mageia 4 Gnome Classic Icons

Postby curioususer » Mar 1st, '14, 18:59

I have installed Mageia 4 and am using the Gnome Classic or fallbackmode.

However I cannot put any icons on the taskbar, what am I missing?

I also need the hide buttons for the taskbar which I have been using in Mageia 3.

Curioususer, i advise to use meaningful titles. Just Mageia 4 just says nothing.
Try something like "How to get icons on the taskbar", or the likes.

Have a good day. ;)

Fallback mode has been removed from GNOME. The GNOME Classic mode provided in Mageia 4 superficially resembles it, but is lacking a number of features. I don't know whether you can do what you want to do in the new Classic mode - I tried and failed, gave up, and switched to using Cinnamon. Maybe someone who had more success than me will pop up and answer your question.

Mageia 4 with the MATE Desktop could also be a pleasing solution to your issue!
I have it running on a older desktop and I am quiet happy with it...
After installation you may want to add some packages like system-monitor or some features of the filemanager via the Packagemanager of Mageia.

I selected MATE but it does not start so am not yet sure what module I am missing. Mate is in the repositories but there have to be some dependencies which I have missed.

Similarly Cinnamon does not start but, I shall reinstall and maybe identify what is missing.

How and where did you select mate?

I have installed both MATE and Cinnamon from the software updates menu. I selected Gnome when I did the install.

Maybe I will do better if I do clean install and then select 'other desktops', although I would have thought it would be the same.

As for Classic mode as it is selectable at boot time I would have thought that it should be possible to make it work.

Yes, it's possible to get Classic mode to work, but only to do what the GNOME developers designed it to do. That may not be what *you* want it to do :-(

For Cinnamon, did you select and install the "task-cinnamon" package? It shouldn't be necessary to do a re-install - we just need to figure out which packages you are missing. What exactly happens when you try to start it?
