[SOLVED] SMPlayer and Dragon won't play dvd's

Postby duder » Feb 17th, '14, 01:05

I have installed the lib64dvdcss2 and the lib64???read and can not play DVD's. I can play video files on DVD's but not packaged DVD movies.
I ran Dragon from a xterm and seen this below, which seems to be a decryption issues.
SMPlayer scrolls pages of stuff as it runs through all the chapters of the DVD, won't play either.

Code: Select all
[dad@localhost ~]$ Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceAdded(QDBusObjectPath)
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceRemoved(QDBusObjectPath)

I seen a couple references to setting the package installer to get "tainted" packages, then update the player. But I only see 32 bit ones when I checked.

I just tried to install VLC and get about the same error as above.

Are those recent DVDs? Check e.g. viewtopic.php?p=44748#p44748

These DVD's are a couple years old. I have played them under Ubunutu / SMPlayer before.
I was thinking maybe I have downloaded some outdated files.
Here is the CSS lib I downloaded, forgot where now.... Lib64dvdcss2-1.2.13-2.mga4.tainted.x86_64.rpm

Thanks Duder

What do you mean, where you downloaded them? They come from the tainted repo:

Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia3 ~]$ urpmq --sources -y dvdcss
ftp://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/Mageia/distrib/4/x86_64/media/tainted/release/lib64dvdcss2-1.2.13-2.mga4.tainted.x86_64.rpm

I was searching with Google and followed a link and downloaded it. I just don't remember now how I got to it.
Just say'n in case something looks fishy.

I found it Nluug.nl

I found some DVD drives have region issues and cause this error.
It says to install a package called regionset and set the region to something other than what it is.
I searched and nothing comes up for this package in the installer.

OK, I got it finally, there are some instruction here and there for the install. I was able to fumbling my way through it.
I downloaded regionset-0.2.tar.gz from http://linvdr.org/download/regionset/
Then installed Make and gcc
Then did make and copied the executable to /usr/sbin. Then from root ran regionset and set it to region 1 and played one of my DVD's.
What a mess!

Interesting, never seen that under linux before.
Probably your box ran under windows beforehand and some software set the region code some time ago.

In such a case I'd simply flash an RPC1 firmware to the drive, as that's a more permanent fix :)
Just have a look for rpc1.org and their drive/firmware database.

It came with windows 8, but I didn't use it, I'm guessing it must have worked.
I t seems to be working, I have rebooted several times and play a couple DVD's and they all play.
So fingers crossed!
