Installer doesn't like pata_it821x based drives

Postby redwolfe » Jun 29th, '11, 04:07

I've installed and run Mageia1 in VMs (VBox) several time, and so I figured to install it on real
hardware to check some performance problems with FC15 as a comparison.

The installer kernel has no problems with the system (EMT64) but the installer doesn't like
the IT8212 IDE card and enters a continuous loop of failing to activate the "hda" device. The
rest of my SATA drives and CD/DVD drives seem to be seen ok.

Is there an easy way to "blacklist" the IT821x driver during installation?

There may be, but I don't know it off hand.
Just a thought - which may work. Try disabling the pata controller in BIOS while you install (assuming of course that you are not trying to install to the pata drive!).
I would recommend installing the boot loader to the new Mageia root partition during the installation, not the boot drive MBR, so that you will be able to boot your existing systems as before.
You need to edit the boot loader configuration at the summary screen during the install or it will default to the MBR - you have been warned !
If that works then you may need to manually boot into Mageia, as the drive assignments will probably change when you re-enable the pata controller.
Post back if your installation succeeds and you need help to boot it.
