I'm stuck on the install part, Solved!

Postby duder » Feb 12th, '14, 22:59

I found a page that has a link for network install. I think this is a 32 bit computer, no idea, windows 8 is unusable.
Anyway I click on the link and it downloads some files. One of them I boot, but windows won't start it.
So how do I get Mageia to install?

Why network install? Also you cannot install Mageia from within windows.

Just get one of the install media from http://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/ and then burn them to a CD/DVD or dump them to a flash drive, following https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation ... h_stick.3F
That wiki page has also more information about installation media, FWIW.

I liked Mandriva because you could just order the DVD and it was easy.
I tried to burn some files to a cd for the internet install but it doesn't work.
I can't even find my drives under windows 8, so I am not sure the files even copied.
I don't have any open USB ports either, so I will need to buy a hub later. AARRGG!

t should be easy to do by now.

You liked Mandriva DVDs? Great! This means that you have at least a DVD drive. So, the easiest way seems to me to get one of the iso-images as doktor5000 suggested and burn it on DVD. This can be done under Windows and I think most (if not all) burning programs under Windows will recognize this iso-image and suggest to burn it directly. Simply do not burn it as a file. Once you burned the iso-image directly you will have a bootable DVD which can be handled like any ordered Mandriva DVD (I am a former Mandriva PowerPack user). A fresh installation should not be a problem. Upgrading systems with very specific hard- and software configurations is a bit different. I was not always lucky with upgrading in the past but I always got help on this forum and the problems I run into could be solved.

This is a new computer with windows 8 and its killing me! I was finally able to get into the bios and select to boot to cd or USB device before windows and turned of the drive protection off.
I am guessing that both the USB thum drive and cd I burnt are not bootable, because I am back in windows. So I will go back and try to figure that out.
Thanks!

Because there is uefi turned on so it's not bootable until you make mageia iso uefi bootable or change it to bios legacy mode.

I think I have it turned off. It seems windows 8 has some kind of built in burning software. I did burn a cd.
But I think there is a special way to burn a cd or dvd to make it bootable. I think that's what I am missing now.
This has all kinds of stuff kind preinstalled, but nothing looks like its burning software.
I didn't see legacy mode so I will look for that too.

Thanks

So how do I get Mageia to install?

Are you sure it's 32bit,how much memory you have in your computer ? if you have over 3gigs memory you need 64bit mageia.

I went back and downloaded the 64 bit live and had my son burn a bootable dvd on his computer, which I am using right now and seems to work just fine.
So I have tried the " install on hard disk" ICON on the desktop and it seems to install fine no obvious errors. However it seems to have a boot issue. I tried several installs and changed a few things here and there an no change.
I get this error, Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected device and press a key.
I did put the HD back to first boot device. I also generally selected all the suggested options on the install.

Hi,
This is not to do with secure boot/ UEFI ?
There maybe a setting in the bios.

most uefi (almost all systems on sale today that come with windows 8)

have a CSM mode , ie compatibility mode and a secure boot.

disable secure boot", "Launch CSM".

without CSM, you will get the please insert system disk, or similar message.

the only way round this is to make mageia work with uefi, which someone has already posted in this thread, which is also required for people using windows 8 and mageia in dual boot.

as you have installed the live CD, im assuming you have told it to wipe disk.

if this is the case the UEFI and windows 8 partitions no longer exist on the disk.

if this is the case CSM is absolutely required.

and finally, this is not going to be a 32 bit computer, if you bought it with windows 8 recently.

perhaps you can tell us what make and model it is, someone here might have one and be able to offer you a much deeper insite.

I realy dont know why anyone posts a thread on here without sumerising the hardware, it would save so much trouble diagnosing your problems.

The computer is an Acer AZC-102 All in one model.
I do have the CSM disabled and installed over the windows 8.
So it sounds more like they are trying to almost embed Windows into the computer so it
will only work with windows?
I'll keep fooling around with it.

thanks.

Wintpe, Thanks dude!
I was sure I had checked CSM before, I went through the BIOS several times.
I checked it this time and it show legacy support under it.
I enabled it and it boot right up! I am so happy!
Thanks !!
