[SOLVED] What can i remove ?

Postby mefisto » Feb 12th, '14, 16:19

Inside me synaptic, the following nvidia drivers are in use...
nvidia 304 kernel 3.12.3
nvidia 304 kernel 3.12.8
nvidia 304 kernel 3.12.9
And nivida desktop 586 latest driver.
CAN i remove any of those, or, is it dangerous, or needed by the system ?
Greetings,
Mefisto

I think that those packages (which are binary kernel modules) will be removed automatically when you remove the corresponding kernel packages. It is advisable to keep the current kernel and one other working version. If you are currently using 3.12.9 (the most recent) you should be able to safely remove the 3.12.3 version using MCC - Install and Remove Software. Set the first drop-down to ALL and the second drop down to "Installed" and search for kernel.

To confirm the version that you are currently using, in a terminal:
Code: Select all
uname -r

As suggested by jkerr82508 you should figre out what kernel are you using, then remove the other unneeded packages.

Assuming you are running kernel 3.12.9, you could safely remove the other two kernels along with the dependent packages.

Or just don't care about them and leave them alone, as they don't do any harm ...

I don't think they do any harm, but i was not convinced. Mageia works just fine on me older HP-Paviljon.
Thanks,
