[SOLVED] Another HP printing problem on Mageia 4

I've got an old HP 2605dn printer that won't print anything other than a test page. I've installed a ton of stuff to make sure
I've got all the required dependencies (Linux is still dependency hell... )
I ran all the diagnostics for HPLIP (V3.13.9) It all checks out. Nothing missing, all dependencies installed. Print queue
checks out.

I'm thinking the problem might be with CUPS and not HPLIP. It appears that HPLIP is sending jobs to CUPS.
I checked the queue by logging into CUPS and it says the print job is "stopped - filter failure".
Does that sound like a CUPS problem? Any idea on how to fix it?

By the way, my printer is connected to 192.168.1.100. It printed fine under Mageia 3.

actual error logfile is 240K...
it looks like HPLIP is OK and the problem is with CUPS...

Unfortunately, it's NOT a solution,,,yet. I'm hoping someone can make heads or tails out of it. It's the error log file (it's BIG).
So, not yet....
Believe me, I've tried everything - even to the point of installing CUPS from Mageia 3. That didn't work either.

I see some filters failed at the beginning, at later for some subsequent job it seems either like a paper jam, paper empty error or it's a problem with the plugin.

i think you might struggle with this, and im sorry, but you just going to have to man up and get your hands dirty.

open a command shell

start -> systemtools -> konsole

in black konsole terminal screen, type

su -

enter root password

urpmi nano


(user friendly editor, unlike vi)

mv /usr/bin/gs /usr/bin/gs.orig

nano /usr/bin/gs


enter the following into nano and save it

        /usr/bin/gs.orig `echo "$@" | sed "s|pswrite|ps2write|g"`
else
        /usr/bin/gs.orig "$@"
fi


you want nothing else in that file, and no blank lines above the first line.

now that its saved confirm that the save worked

cat /usr/bin/gs


does it look the same.

no

rm /usr/bin/gs


go back to nano

try again

if successfull.

chmod 755 /usr/bin/gs


now close terminal and

see if workaround works.

Fortunately I am not totally unfamiliar with konsole so following your instructions was fairly straightforward, only the 'nano' bit caused me problems. Got there in the end though.

I originally started the thread. Sorry it took so long for me to get back.
I'm pretty sure the workaround has fixed it, because I couldn't print anything at all (other than a test page)

At least I can print an e-mail now!
