Mageia 4 - how to upgrade

I am using Mageia 3 (KDE - I believe) and have been VERY happy with it. I see that version 4 is out, and my updater is not notifying me of an upgrade. How do I go about upgrading to version 4, what are the major improvements? I am OK in relation to tech skills, but not skilled in programming, etc. So please - be gentle with me. LOL. Thanks in advance, for a great dystro.

that makes me think you are a novice.

so firstly dont take this the wrong way, but dont upgrade until
those that have a good idea how to fix issues, have had a chance to look over this for a while as
already there are some issues arising that may not be for a pleasant expirience if you are a novice.

just my opinion, but give it a month.

if you do ignore my personal opinion, then please use clonezilla or similar to
take a complete backup of your system , to another disk.

at least if your system becaomes unusable you have a quick way back to normal operation.

and if its any indication , i do know what im doing (well mostly) and i wont be upgrading to mga4
till around this time next year, and that is no reflection on the product, i just like to wait till
things are on a sure prooven footing.

Depending on whether "New Default releases" check is enabled or not, is should come up on your sys tray as a blue icon with an arrow on it !

Having said that, mines not checked and its still informed me

But if you are unsure as wintpe has said, wait for us people that know how too first.

you are correct that I am a novoice to Mageia. I have been using it with much happiness, but do not know all the technical aspects. Am I correct to say that as the "issues" are corrected, and it is an official (fully stable) system - that the updater will notify me of the update?

Thanks for the advice - I am very happy with 3, so there is no hurry. Do you have any advice on the major improvements I can look for with version 4?

Yes, it should. The applet should show you an icon as this one:

Best wait until you see it, as you mirror may take some time to completely sync the Mageia 4 packages. If you don't see it within the next month, just report back here.

A few hours ago, I tried upgrade using the DVD, and it was apparently unable to use Mageia's mirror list to get a FULLY UP-TO-DATE mirror. It proceeded to try and upgrade using just 'core' and 'nonfree' from the DVD, and failed to complete.

I switched to the command-line 'online upgrade' process. I chose to use 'mirrors.kernel.org' as media sources, they seemed to be complete (and very fast). "urpmi --replacefiles --auto-update --auto" wrestled with about 2100 RPMs on the first round (i have a very 'fat' box), but didn't find additional RPMs when I repeated immediately. It also didn't find any addtional RPMs following restart. Although those 2nd and 3rd re-runs have been necessary in the past (Mga2 -> Mga3, the very first command found ALL of the RPMs in this upgrade.

I've not tried any of my alternate DE's yet, but the upgraded KDE desktop works perfectly. It "feels" a bit faster, too. I'm delighted by the simplicity and relative safety of the command-line upgrade. absolutely flawless, but you do need a good netowrk connection.

I will do the same!

I won't be waiting THAT long, but since I'll be upgrading my main production system (without which I get no work done), I will be waiting until all the issues are identified and corrected, then I will upgrade when I don't have a lot of work to do, and when I'm in the mood to deal with it.

I undoubtedly would be able to solve any issues that come up, one way or another, but I'm not into pain and I have to have this system working.

If I were a Linux novice right now, I would just kick back, relax, and wait until everything was taken care of.
