[SOLVED] Removing package sane-backends-iscan

Postby capio » Jan 7th, '14, 14:17

hello, i am new, so please be gentle!

I have been trying mageia 3 for about 2 weeks and i am slowly becoming familiar with it, and like it very much, however I have been trying to my printer/scanner, (Epson xp-205) and am finding great difficulty. I have trawled the web for answers but cannot find a definitive one.

From what I can see it is not supported by sane, so i have tried to download and install the drivers from epson web site and also iscan.

Whern I try to install iscan i get a message telling me i must un-install 'sane-backends-iscan' because of conflict with iscan-free, when i try to do this in Mageia control ctr. i get the error 'cant call method destroy on an undefined value at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.16.3/Rpmdrake/pkg.pm line 648.

I had also installed some sane packages earlier when trying to get the scanner to install.

The printer is an all in one and is connected by wifi, the printer is recognised and prints using cups, but the scanner refuses to be found.

When i do a search in hardware devices or when i searcg specifically for a scanner it is not there

Appreciate any help

Have you tried to first uninstall sane-backends-iscan, and after that is complete continuing to install iscan?

Please open up a terminal, and as root run the following commands and post the output here please
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep -e iscan -e sane
urpme --test sane-backends-iscan

Thanks for the reply, but before you replied I already tried to remove some other sane packages which caused package manager to crash! So i put the live disc back in and re-loaded magiea without changing any partitions, this removed all unneccesary files (including some packages i had installed myself such as skype, but i jusr re-installed these). I then ran the commands as you suggest wuth the followingL

Code: Select all
[root@localhost jim]# rpm -qa | grep -e iscan -e sane
lib64ksane0-4.10.5-1.1.mga3
sane-backends-1.0.23-7.mga3
lib64sane1-1.0.23-7.mga3
sane-backends-iscan-1.0.23-7.mga3

Code: Select all
[root@localhost jim]# urpme --test sane-backends-iscan
testing removal of sane-backends-iscan-1.0.23-7.mga3.x86_64
Removal is possible
[root@localhost jim]#

It seems i can now un-install, but i have not tried, as i would like some clear procedure for installing my printer/scanner (Epson xp-205)(wi-fi), before i do anything else.

can you help with this

Thanks again

Please next time use code tags as explained in ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandriva/m ... e_tags.ogv

From what I know, basically you only need to install the Epson iscan packages, maybe register the scanner once and be done with it,
then you can use it via e.g. iscan, simple-scan, xsane or whatever you'd like to use.
Check https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Epson_scanne ... from_Epson

Thank you again, so I followed these steps, 'http://download.ebz.epson.net/faq/linux ... 00007.html', and learned howto edit epkowa.conf, this i did and added the ip address of the printer, success! printer/scanner then both worked with wifi.

However when i switch off printer and switch back on again, the printer is not found and i have to reinstall and then re-edit epkowa.conf with new ip address.

Well, then you need to configure your router/wireless AP to always assign the same IP adress to the printer.
That's often called static DHCP.

What router/AP do you use?

What model? You have to look up in the manual, how to assign fixed IP adresses to devices.
