You installation seems pretty broken, going by the results with 3rd party software. Weird thing is, it only seems to happen with 3rd party
stuff, you mentioned Skype, Acrobat Reader and Google Earth. Only thing that those have in common is that they are all i586 programs.
I'd say do a reinstall using FreeDVD, and check on the md5sum!
