[SOLVED] No such file or directory?

Postby scarper » Jan 4th, '14, 00:52

Hello! Haven't posted in the forums in a long while so forgive me if this isn't the correct one! I recently ditched Windows 8.1 for Mageia Linux so before the New Year's I wiped my drive and installed Mageia! My issue is that whenever I install a .rpm file that isn't from the Mageia repository it looks like the system can't find the file? For example if I execute Adobe Reader I will get this message:

Code: Select all
[mark@NeoCopernicus ~]$ acroread
/usr/bin/acroread: line 22: /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread: No such file or directory

The same error happened after I installed Google Earth and tried to run it. I have checked the respective directories and I can confirm the files for Google Earth and Adobe Reader are there. I guess it's good to note that Google Chrome had installed successfully which was downloaded from the website. Any thoughts?

Mageia Linux 3 x64
KDE4

PS: The specific packages that were installed were Google Earth x64 and Adobe Reader i486. I had also tried installing Google Earth xi386 and the same error had occurred.

For Google Earth, please check: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4718&p=33043&hilit=google+earth#p33043

This might work for you as well

And acroread works here fine. I've downloaded the rpm from the website and installed it:
Code: Select all

Google Earth has caught signal 11.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Google Earth has crashed.
This is a bug in the program, and should never happen under normal
circumstances. A bug report and debugging data have been written
 to this text file:

Please include this file if you submit a bug report to Google.

For Adobe Reader I uninstalled it, cleared the orphan packages, and then reinstalled it. I tried opening it again but the "No such file" error came up again. Also during the install there were a couple of errors :

Code: Select all
[root@NeoCopernicus mark]# urpmi /home/mark/Downloads/AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.rpm

Google Earth has caught signal 11.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Google Earth has crashed.
This is a bug in the program, and should never happen under normal
circumstances. A bug report and debugging data have been written
 to this text file:

    /home/mark/.googleearth/crashlogs/crashlog-52c75417.txt

Please include this file if you submit a bug report to Google.
Is there different information in the txt-file? Maybe it's worth to report it to Google?

I'd definitely like to keep this thread open in case other people have ideas. I really don't want to have to go through the whole wiping and reinstalling thing again especially since it's a pain in the butt. Reinstalling the whole thing just for two programs may seem like much, but at the very least I can't seem to find an alternative PDF viewer so it definitely is a last resort.

If you are using KDE, okular is probably already installed. IMHO, it's much more efficient than acroread.

Ah thanks jkerr! I don't know why it didn't tell me Okular was an option! :)

I installed Skype and confirmed that "No such file or directory" affects it too:

Code: Select all
/usr/bin/skype: line 2: /usr/share/skype/skype: No such file or directory

And yes the files are there. I've tried uninstalling all the 32-bit files and only reinstalled the ones needed for Skype.

Ok, the first three look normal, although you're using a version of Skype that's quite old, but shouldn't matter.
The last two shouldn't fail.

When installing Mageia, which media did you use, and did you change anything about security setup,
or made some other changes to default installation? Did you change any permissions later on?

Mageia 3 LiveDVD 64-bit. Package media wise I added (after the install) all the 64 bit media, enabled the remaining 32-bit media, and enabled the Tainted media. IIRC I accidentally enabled some backports to some of them, this happened after the install.

I didn't change any security until I didn't need the disk any more. On my first boot I told Mageia to open all the ports.

The only change I made before the install was to install flash so I can watch some YouTube while it was installing. :) Other than that I did not touch anything else with the LiveDVD. It was either installing flash or updating firefox, one of those two (or both!).

Please run as normal user
Code: Select all
strace -f -o output.log /usr/bin/skype
and attach the resulting output.log here.

I had to install strace (64-bit of course) since the command wouldn't go. When it did go:

Code: Select all
[mark@NeoCopernicus ~]$ strace -f -o output.log /usr/bin/skype
/usr/bin/skype: line 2: /usr/share/skype/skype: No such file or directory

Hmmm, doesn't help that much.

3356 execve("/usr/share/skype/skype", ["/usr/share/skype/skype"], [/* 90 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
3356 stat("/usr/share/skype/skype", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0755, st_size=28687700, ...}) = 0

You installation seems pretty broken, going by the results with 3rd party software. Weird thing is, it only seems to happen with 3rd party
stuff, you mentioned Skype, Acrobat Reader and Google Earth. Only thing that those have in common is that they are all i586 programs.

I'd say do a reinstall using FreeDVD, and check on the md5sum!

Two questions:

Is the FreeDVD the one listed in the "Classical Installation Flavours" section? I had downloaded the DVD 64bit (3.9GB) version in advance. And I'll definitely check with a hash this time. :D

Should I format my /home partition too? My files are backed up on external hard drive(which has proven to definitely worth the money), it's just a pain in the butt to move it back on this laptop. :P

Yes.

Probably not necessary.

But you could try to run the problematic apps without reinstalling as a freshly created user, to rule out issues with your user profile.

Thanks a reinstall worked perfectly! I actually verified the original DVD I burned the disk image onto and it looked like there were some bad sectors. I switched the DVD and it verified correctly. :) Also tried reproducing the problem just for fun and nothing wrong happened! All packages 3rd party packages installed and ran fine (except 64-bit Google Earth and 32-bit worked like a breeze. Thanks again for all your help! :D

Please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [SOLVED], thanks

Related, as you seemed to be using an older Skype version, please have a look at the MAQeia: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1121

Done!

As for Skype I just downloaded the dynamic package and created a link to the desktop. I will definitely give your thread a read when I have more time. Thanks again! :)

Well, you could have simply installed get-skype package. Also no need to read the whole thread, only the first post.
