Today's update derped my computer-Running slow now.

The update incorporating kernel 3.10.24-desktop-2.mga for my AMD based 64 Bit HP Pavilion gave some odd results:

All functions appear to work, but extremely slowly. For instance, clicking a menu header in any application will cause the menu to appear ...after 30-90 seconds.
Attempting to play a short MP4 file, the audio plays normally, but the video appears as a series of still images every minute or so.

This computer uses an AMD A6-3650 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (6530D Display adapter) which has had compatibility troubles in the past with Mageia Linux, so my first suspicion is that the video adapter compatibility problem has returned.

Attempting to boot into older Mageia kernels results in an endless black-screen boot loop, which is the sole reason I booted into Windows 7 to post this. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Note though, that I am not entirely expert here. I'm just another linux user.

Hi,

start system monitor- in tools / system tools from the mageia launcher menu or from " run command ".
it probably shows the cpu running at 100%, all the time.

if so, you now have to find the culprit, and, as you know, the display driver / settings is a good place to start.

Heh... It looks like I must have used a different login when I set up my Windows 7 box 'way back when... Okay, I'll clear that up later. I'm the same guy, "XTVEngr."
Anyway, the CPU usage is normal-to-low, generally running at about 10%. Whatever the slow-computer problem is, it's not a swamped CPU.
I've stumbled across a temporary work-around, using the "Safe Boot" F3 option at the OS-select splash screen. That allows booting to Mageia 3 with full functionality, though the window manager GUI has a different and "older" appearance.

Now I suppose I should look at the details of a "Safe" boot option, and find out which part of that option's settings might be the clue I need.

No expert here, but I imagine it could be something with using the wrong video driver.

The video driver is part of an automatic update, I really don't have much control over which driver gets installed. All I know about that is: Before the update, it worked. After the update, it - worked - very - slowly.
However, looking into the splash-page F3 kernel options: choosing any of the three non-default options gives me exactly the same result: Everything works, and I suddenly have an older version of the Gnome GUI. Examining the three non-defaults, I see that they all contain the same string of kernel options. I'll assume they're all "Safe Mode" boot.

Oh well! Merry Christmas to all, and since I can still use this computer--I'll just wait for the next update and hope it fixes the small problem.

Well, none of the alternate drivers probably supports direct rendering and/or accelerated OpenGL, so you will only get GNOME classic, which is the fallback.
