[SOLVED] No files inside folder INITRD, should I care?

Postby eor2004 » Aug 25th, '13, 20:20

Hi friends, I know is a strange question but here I go, I installed Mageia 3 KDE 32 on a friends computer, he's new to linux, the guy got so excited about linux and/or Mageia that he's started to mess around with the pc and so he may have accidentally deleted the files inside the INITRD folder inside the root folder, the computer seems to be fine, it reboots and shutdowns well, nothing appear to be wrong, so I was wondering if the deletion of this files in INITRD folder will damage my friend Mageia install?

I have only 1 one file in that folder:

Code: Select all
$ cd /initrd/
$ ll
total 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 108 Dec 17  2009 README.WARNING

$ cat README.WARNING
(mkinitrd) Don't remove this directory, it's needed at boot time,
in the initrd, to perform the pivot_root.

I had expected to see the README.WARNING file, but for some reason it has been dropped in Mageia 3 (and cauldron). I can't remember when I last saw it - it certainly used to be present at some point in the past, but I'm not certain when exactly it was dropped. (It's not something that I usually look for.) Perhaps it should be restored?

Do you really expect someone who removes folders in / to read a README file in one of those folders beforehand?

I reinstalled Mageia 3, but this time the 64bit version KDE, and about the initrd folder, it was empty by default when I checked, so case closed! :lol:
