It looks like user rejean is using a non standard keyboard layout and if you reuse that users home you'll likely just be back where you are now.

Try creating a new user with

useradd new-user

at a root console and see if that user has the same problem.

So direct root login in terminal works? But switching from user to root does not, correct?
