[SOLVED] Multi-frame is missing from xvidcap-1.1.7 cant reco

Postby msjs08 » Jul 30th, '13, 09:43

The multi-frame recording option is missing from the preferences of xvidcap therefore I cannot set a filename or a location to save to record video. This is clean install using my old home partition.

I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same deal. I presumed it was a bug because it was a new install and reported it as such but no-one has confirmed it so I start to wonder.
Can anyone with a new install start xvidcap and see the multiframe recording preference?

This is a problem reported on several distros such as here
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xvidcap/

It appears xvidcap can only capture in .xwd format, and ffmpeg cannot read xwd files.

Since xvidcap has not been maintained since 2009 your best bet is to try one of the alternatives suggested in the link.

I've been caught out by sourceforge.net
It said xvidcap was last updated 2013-04-24 (now why do they say that when digging further it's obvious that it wasn't)

recordMyDesktop was last updated 2008
screencast 2007

We'll try a couple of others then.
Thanks

[edit]
hmmm wasn't impressed with them, tried alien and the jaunty .deb package and it works again

I have been recompiling the xvidcap package, and it seems there are incompatibilities with the current version of ffmpeg.

There are already several patches to xvidcap to keep it working with various iterations of ffmpeg. Apparently it needs to be done again. This is the problem with unmaintained code :(

I tried FDesktopRecorder and recordmydesktop (actually gtk-recordmydesktop), both are in the repositories and both worked well for video record. I didn't tried to record with audio.

Note: recordmydesktop only encode in free codec/container. FDesktopRecorder use x264 and avi.
