Asus K55n-ds81 and kde power management

Postby rychok » Jul 11th, '13, 02:36

I have installed Mageia 3 on Asus K55N laptop, enerything seems to be fine except kde power management, so laptop will never blank the display.
It dims it after 3 minutes (on battery settings) even when charger is plugged in) then after few minutes the brightness is set back to 100%. Xscreensaver sees this as user activity. When power kde management is turned off xscreensaver works correctly and is suspending display the way is set.
It is probably specific to Asus way of battery charging so the battery is never charged to 100%, and even with power adapter plugged in status mostly shows 97% discharging. My guess is that kde sees this behavior like unplugging and plugging back power adapter every few minutes.
But this is only my guess, does anyone experienced anything like this. I do not thing there is any solution to this for now.

The other thing that is not working perfectly is Xscreensaver actually GL screensavers are not displaying user and password window, so I have extra security typing them blindly. This is probably due to laptop's ATI graphic card, everything works correctly on my desktop with NVidia card. I have seen few more glitches running flight simulator, VMware showing warning and suggesting disabling 3D support for this card but it is working fine.

Thanks for any advice.

You may want to look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_3_Err ... top_issues or google around for K55-specific ACPI bugs.

Thank You for response,

Before posting on forum I have goggle it and found some older problems with backlit brightness, but related to keyboard keys. They are working fine on mine.
I thought that the issue is based on battery charging management when adapter is plugged in, bat same thing happens when laptop is on battery. Somehow dimming feature in KDE power management is creating user type event, or rather with this option checked it mistakenly sees something as user action and bringing back screen to !00% brightness reseting also timer of inactivity.
As work around I have disable timed backlit dimming in KDE power management.

Hi,

I have a similar (though not exactly the same) issue with my Asus laptop and it seems to me that in this kind of problems only Asus is to blame.
I described it and the work-around here, might be of some help:
