Zoneminder

I move all my computers to M3 except one server. Its still based on Mandriva 2011 because server works 24/365 and it is too many services for everyday use is installed on it.
My question is. Zoneminder is available in M2 and will be (as far as i know) in M3. Can I connect/install appropriate repo to Mandriva 2011 repo base on my server for installing only zoneminder form rpm and additional necessary modules (basically PERL modules). If yes, how can I do it.

So you depend on your server, but also want to break it?
You would be better of dowloading the src.rpm of zoneminder and rebuild it on the Mandriva 2011 server,
for Mageia 3 that would be e.g. http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/p ... ed.src.rpm

Do you know how to do such rebuild?

Good idea, but not useful in case of this one particular server. Because of many compiled apps for this version of OS i have on it (MDV 2011) i am looking for easy and quick way to install zoneminder. So my question was. Be so kind to answer, is any way to install zoneminder form M2 (or M3) repo - or not? (including dependencies)

i think the simple answer is, dont try.

which is what doktor was trying to say.

as you will be back complaining your server is trashed and you need help sorting it out.

the way doktor has advised is the best possible advice you will get.

Be advised that there is no migration path from Mandriva 2011 to Mageia at all, as Mandriva uses RPM5 and Mageia rpm.org.

Yep, I know. I migrated 7 PC`s and two servers plus my home server and 2 PC`s. Migration means to install and try to move all functionality to new one PC. Just "plug and pray" ;-)

Personal opinion: nothing against mageia

but for a server i would not be choosing a bleeding edge distribution like mageia at all.

all my own home servers are Centos, some are centos 6 and some centos 5.

I do not see why people who have servers , are so desperate to keep upgrading to the latest release, it brings nothing but problems.

OK mageias lifetime of each release , may be of concern, again the reason to switch to Centos, where the lifetime of Centos 6 is about 7 years.

under the hood, so similar to mageia you wont have to learn much at all.

you might have to learn to use an editor like vi to be efficient.

there is a GUI that has tools similar to MCC, perhaps not quite as slick.

but the lifetime and stability is a huge benefit.

and since Centos 6 is a 100% clone of redhat 6, you can be assured, well speaking for the company i work for without naming them.....

we run in the region of 12000 installed hosts running redhat5 , and will be deploying redhat 6 soon.

I user M3 on company servers and aprox 10 laptops, because I want to unify environment the company use. So we have only M3 and 15 Apple laptops. It is small company (30 employs) and I am the only administrator. That`s why I do so.
By the way. My two M3 servers are not physical machines but two instances under VMware in Data Center.

thats fair enough, you want to reduce the complexity.

of that 12000 above at least half are also running under ESXi
