Which multimedia aplication in M3 is considered primary

Of the many multimedia apps available on M3 which one
could be considered the primary app? VLC works for
both audio and video. smplayer works with many.
Totem ( Videos ) most.

Actually none is considered "primary", the same as for the many desktop environments.
One of the strengths and weaknesses of linux at the same time, nowadays :/

If you ask me, throw most of them out of the window, and polish the others left a bit more.
Wouldn't it be enough to have one or two audio/video players, which integrate well in each desktop environment,
offer a working browser plugin and stuff like that? Rough estimation is that we currently probably have 20 video and audio players,
all working to some degree. We should keep some of the audio-only ones, but for media players ?
I prefer working and polished over masses of half-working unpolished software

I'm for VLC, it plays everything, does conversion, streaming, recording and some other pretty advanced stuff.
What it lacks is good playlist handling and a working browser plugin out-of-the-box.

You've hit exactly at what I'm seeing here in M3. I don't think we can get all players to work with all
decoders and as a result of that some of them stumble ( Videos/Totem ). I'm not sure it's worth
opening a bug for one or two specific decoders for one specific player.

VLC seems to catch most of the decoders pretty well. I haven't found a bad wrinkle in that one yet.
So I've kinda settled on VLC for now. SMplayer is a close second.

Same kinda thing applies to the likes of Kino/OpenShot. Kino's stumbling on a couple encoders where
as OpenShot is not so so long as you use the Tainted Repo. But I don't think it's worth opening a specific
bug for a specific encoder so long as one of the apps/encoders does the job.
